  • Can Not Update Exchange 2003 to SP1

    Just recently installed Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition with SP1 as my only server -- so it is the Domain Controller. Everything is running fine with no errors. I then installed Exchange 2003 a day later on the same machine and that too has no problems. A day later I attempted to update Exchange to SP1 by following these steps:

    1) Start Windows Explorer.
    2) Navigate to the \setup\i386 folder on the SP1 media (e.g, CD-ROM, folder).
    3) Run update.exe.
    4) Click Next on the SP1 installation dialog box's welcome screen.
    5) Select "I agree" and click Next.

    . . . on the next screen I select the "Update" action and immediately upon that selection I get the following error:

    ---------------------------------------
    Microsoft Exchange Installation Wizard
    ---------------------------------------
    The component "Microsoft Exchange Messaging and Collaboration Services" cannot be assigned the action "Update" because:

    - The Active Directory schema is not up-to-date. You must run setup with the "/ForestPrep" switch. If you have already done this with the current version of Setup, then you must wait for replication to complete. Consult your documentation for details.

    - The local domain configuration is not up-to-date. You must run setup with the "/DomainPrep" switch within this domain. If you have already done this with the current version of Setup, then you must wait for replication to complete. Consult your documentation for details.

    I ensured that:

    -- I ran both ForestPrep and DomainPrep prior to the original Exchange install (confirmed this following MS article 274737 (http://tinyurl.com/eylw7))
    -- I am running the update under an account that is a member of the Enterprise Administrators, Schema Administrators and local Administrators groups
    -- Windows Management Instrumentation service is running per MS article 824112 (http://tinyurl.com/3ch4x3)
    -- Running Replmon showed no errors

    How do I get past this, resolve this issue or satisfy the requirement?? What am I doing wrong??

    Any reason you are installing Exchange 2003 SP1? SP2 is over two years old.

    You can run prep again, which is certainly what I would do to start with.

      Re: Can Not Update Exchange 2003 to SP1

      Thanks Sembee. I believe SP1 needs to be installed before SP2 as a requirement.

      How do I run the prep again?? I used exdeploy to install Exchange in the first place. Do I run the preps using the original setup.exe or using update.exe either from SP1 or SP2??

        Re: Can Not Update Exchange 2003 to SP1

        SP1 is not a requirement for SP2 AFAIK. I would run ForestPrep and DomainPrep again as it will not hurt and then try SP2 again.

            I think from the original cd should be fine.

              Still no luck. Even tried running the preps as a different user. Try to run the update and same error message.

                Re: Can Not Update Exchange 2003 to SP1

                Update.exe will not prep the domain for you. You can only use the original installation CD.
                As already pointed out, Exchange service packs are cumulative. The only time you have to deploy the service packs in order is if you are building a frontend server where the backend server/s were taken through the same service pack path.

                You haven't actually posted what error you are getting when you try and run the prep.
                Are you using THE administrator account or an equivalent?

                Simon.

                  Hi Sembee,

                  I re-ran the preps using the exdeploy tool and did not get any errors. I also re-ran the OrgPrepCheck tool to ensure proper prep and replication. These are the results:

                  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
                  #*** Exdeploy began: 03/03/2008 20:36:44 ***#
                  + Exchange 5.5 Server: barney
                  + Global Catalog Server: barney
                  + Tools run: PolCheck, and OrgCheck.
                  - Error: Could not connect to the Exchange 5.5 server 'barney'. Tools that require an Exchange 5.5 server will discover one or will not run.
                  + Preparing Active Directory for Exchange Server 2003 (OrgPrepCheck)
                  - Organization Readiness Check (OrgCheck)
                  OrgCheck verifies the Exchange extensions to the Active Directory schema, checks the existence and membership of the Exchange Domain Servers group and Exchange Enterprise servers group, and checks that a global catalog server is available in a domain in which DomainPrep has been run.
                  The Exchange Domain Servers group 'cn=Exchange Domain Servers,cn=Users,DC=heatlynet,DC=local' does contain the local computer 'CN=BARNEY,OU=Domain Controllers,DC=heatlynet,DC=local'.
                  OrgCheck completed successfully.
                  - Policy Check (PolCheck)
                  PolCheck verifies that the necessary permissions are configured correctly on domain controllers. Details are logged to exdeploy-polcheck.log.
                  PolCheck completed successfully.
                  #*** Exdeploy finished: 03/03/2008 20:36:45 ***#
                  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

                  I then tried to run the SP2 update and still received the error:

                  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
                  ---------------------------------------
                  Microsoft Exchange Installation Wizard
                  ---------------------------------------
                  The component "Microsoft Exchange Messaging and Collaboration Services" cannot be assigned the action "Update" because:
                  - The Active Directory schema is not up-to-date. You must run setup with the "/ForestPrep" switch. If you have already done this with the current version of Setup, then you must wait for replication to complete. Consult your documentation for details.
                  - The local domain configuration is not up-to-date. You must run setup with the "/DomainPrep" switch within this domain. If you have already done this with the current version of Setup, then you must wait for replication to complete. Consult your documentation for details.
                  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

                  I also reformatted the server, installed Windows 2003 with SP1, installed Exchange 2003 and attempted to run the SP2 update to no avail.

                  Thoughts??

                    Re: Can Not Update Exchange 2003 to SP1

                    I would check my AD environment for lingering objects.
                    This is a wild guess, but there could be a domain controller which hasn't logged on. So AD is still waiting to replicate to all domain controllers.

                      I would have to agree with the post above - this is starting to look like an issue with the domain, rather than Exchange. The server is either failing to see the domain correctly, something like that.

                        Thanks guys. This is a brand new box with only Windows 2003 SP1 on it. There are no other servers in the mix on separate physical boxes. Maybe I should reformat the box and reinstall Windows 2003 from scratch and then Exchange but do it while the box is disconnected from the network. It must be seeing something on the network or workstations with rogue information as you suggest.

                          You cannot work with Exchange with the server disconnected from the network. If there are no other Exchange servers then you could look at a complete removal of Exchange form the domain, including a complete clean out of the domain.

                          Another option would be a rebuild of the domain. I have had to do that in the past, often with smaller sites.

                            Re: Can Not Update Exchange 2003 to SP1

                            Okay, right now I have a Dell PowerEdge server with a brand new Windows 2003 SP1 build (drive formatted) acting as the domain controller with Exchange 2003 (no service packs installed) installed and connected straight to a Linksys router and out to the Internet via a cable modem. No other computer is or has been connected to the router or any switch. So the server is not seeing any other computer, workstations or servers. I still get this crazy message when I try to apply SP2 for exchange:

                            ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
                            ---------------------------------------
                            Microsoft Exchange Installation Wizard
                            ---------------------------------------
                            The component "Microsoft Exchange Messaging and Collaboration Services" cannot be assigned the action "Update" because:
                            - The Active Directory schema is not up-to-date. You must run setup with the "/ForestPrep" switch. If you have already done this with the current version of Setup, then you must wait for replication to complete. Consult your documentation for details.
                            - The local domain configuration is not up-to-date. You must run setup with the "/DomainPrep" switch within this domain. If you have already done this with the current version of Setup, then you must wait for replication to complete. Consult your documentation for details.
                            ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

                            ForestPrep and DomainPrep were run when I installed Exchange and succeeded. What's it take then for Exchange to replicate with Active Directory on such a simple/small setup??

                              Was that a fresh domain or just a fresh build of the server?
                              If it is a fresh domain then it must be something that you are doing. If it was an existing domain then I wouldn't be surprised if the problem continued as I suspect the problem is with the domain.
