  • Exchange 2003 Disaster - How To Restore information Store

I have a SBS 2003 Server which went down without any backups except for the exchange server which has an online backup and the actual database files. How can I restore exchange mailboxes to a newly built server which has a new active directory
    Thanks
    Dominic

You will have to build the new server with the same name as the original. Then install Exchange with the same Org name as the original server. Create all mailboxes from scratch and then restore the data.

However your best option is probably to call Microsoft and pay their fee. They will help you through what needs to be done and not done. Otherwise you could lose data or a lot of time.

I have tried the rebuild with the same users but when I use exmerge to try and extract the mailboxes it fails. I think it looks at the new active directory and is unable to identify the old mailboxes with the users accounts
      Thanks

Have you actually restored the database and attached the mailboxes to user accounts?
It is a lot more complicated on SBS as you have lost the entire domain so cannot do a disaster recovery installation.

          Hi Simon
I restored the database but was unable to attach mailboxes to accounts. The log said it couldnt identify the users. Ihave included an example below
          Regards
          Dominic

[23:55:35] Mailbox '/O=PCNHOME/OU=FIRST ADMINISTRATIVE GROUP/CN=CONFIGURATION/CN=CONNECTIONS/CN=SMTP (SERVER001)/CN={89AF3574-F2AE-46E4-B2FB-CA09107BF1D0}' will be ignored as its DN contains strings in the ignore list
[23:55:35] Error! Cannot identify the user with the msExchMailboxGuid a\1D\E3\D8H\E0SM\BDx\DD\93\12\E0\27\05. The legacyExchangeDN is /O=PCNHOME/OU=FIRST ADMINISTRATIVE GROUP/CN=RECIPIENTS/CN=ADMINISTRATOR.

Unless the replacement server is 100% identical to the old server, including name, Exchange org name, domain name etc, then you will get errors. I would suggest that you get Microsoft involved, as it will be more cost effective.
Otherwise you could be looking at a lot of wasted time.
Another option would be to look at soemthing like OnTrack PowerControls which can extract the raw data, but that is more than the Microsoft support call.

              Thanks Simon
Theserver settings are the same, i am going to give it one more go. If that fails I might just try and restore from the files on the workstations
