  • POP/SMTP Not getting outside mail to my exchange 2003 account?

How do I set up an email on Exchange 2003 to receive emails from outside the company network. There is no IT person with the company so i have to figure this out. There are two examples that I can give so that you can understand what I am talking about...

    1. Created a new user in exchange 2003, I set up that persons computer with Outlook 2007. That person is able to receive messages from within the company, but cannot receive outside emails from other companies, or regular internet emails (Yahoo etc.) Did I skip a step?

    2. On an existing account on the same Exchange 2003 server, I changed the last name of an employee to her NEW married name. Everything switched fine except for the email issue where before i switched her last name she WAS receiving outside emails and now she only receives emails from only in house.

What am I doing wrong? What am I NOT doing?

The best thing I would suggest is that you call someone in to look at the server. If you don't know what you are doing then a consultant who can look at the machine and tell you how it is configured will be the best option. She/He may also be able to tell you what you need to do to get email to flow.

If email was working correctly and is not now, then that probably means the configuration is correct, but something else has to be done to get the email to come in.

You haven't said what version of Exchange you are using - whether it is SBS or not. If it is SBS then you might be using the POP3 connector. IF so then that will have to be updated. Do you know if your email goes to an ISP first and then to your server? If that is the case that service may also have to be updated.

You haven't provided enough information to be able to answer the question, and you may not know enough to be able to provide information to give you an answer.

        I'd agree with Simon,
get someone to look at the Exchange for you.

          Simon...

          Thank you for your help.
Yes it is Exchange 2003 Small Business Server. How do I access the POP3 Connector? I just basically want to add another user which i did accomplish on the server, but I see no option for the pop/smtp. Thank you for your help.
I'm sorry I can't provide you with better information. Our IT Person walked out of the job and left us for sitting ducks.

            SBS - run the wizard.
You need to run the Connect to the Internet and email wizard. That is what you have to use to configure Exchange/Email. You will find it in the server management console.
