  • Mailboxes on (2) different Exchange Servers

    Hello Everyone,

I have a customer scenario that I would like someone to comment on.

For legal reasons user mail is stored on two different exchange servers ServerA and ServerB. Each Server is a member of a different domain. Mail is currently POP'd - looking to stop that and have Exchange be responsible for all mail.

I have user A on Server A and User B on Server B.
The smtp address will be the same for both users ie [email protected] [email protected]

All mail flow will be to ServerA . Will Server A handle all Exchange manage routing / forwarding of mail to UserB's mailbox automatically.
Can this work if the exchange servers are on different domains. Both Exchange Servers are running Exchange 2003.

Exchange can only handle email flow automatically where the two servers are in the same Forest and therefore the same Exchange org. If they are in separate forests then you have to do fiddling around using contacts and virtual domains to get the email to flow between the servers, as Exchange normally presumes that it is responsible for all email for a domain.

I have a page on my web site that outlines one technique that I have used in the past.

      Thanks Simon,

Can (2) Exchange servers be members of the same exchange org if they are in different AD Domains?

      Thanks

          Lets clarify that.
If the servers are a member of two domains which are both members of the same FOREST, then that is ok. However if they are in two separate Forests (ie were built separately) then they cannot be members of the same Exchange org. Exchange org boundaries match the FOREST.
