  • Seting up offsite Exchange DR, need some advice

I have some retired servers that I want to use as a DR setup. I need to restore Exchange information to a new server that is NOT part of the production AD nor has any contact with the production AD.

I currently have Exchange on a box called SERVER7 and the backup occurs with Backup Exec on SERVER8. I need to restore data from both onto this single box.

I have set up Windows 2000 on this DR box and it's ready to go with everything. I'm just not sure if I should run DCPROMO on this new box or do a System State Restore. If I do DCPROMO, do I call the domain the same thing? Should I name the machines the same thing as the production environment?

That leads me into the Exchange 2003 part of things. Do I do a setup /disasterrecovery ? Or install Exchange complete with the same organization name and then do a restore of the stores?

Should I consider running Exchange in a VM? Is there a better way to do what I'm trying to do? I'm open to suggestions!

    Thanks for any input.

The way how I do it for DR is:

Promote it as ADC in a production make it a GC take it offline and clean meta from production.

No this offline box is independent so seize all the five roles on it and make it DNS also. DR AD setup is ready. The easiest way.....

So how would you clean the metadata? I would think that if you had all the GC info in there that it would cause issues. It would be looking for an Exchange server that was not there.

Plus I'm setting up the DR system to have a different topology (1 server opposed to 2) than the production setup so I would think that is an issue.

If metadata has been cleaned then exchange will not lookup for that DC.......

The way that I do this is to use virtual machines.
Build the domain controller in a virtual machine. Make it a GC/DC with DNS etc and wait for it to replicate.

          Then shutdown the server.

          Copy the files elsewhere.

Take the copy to your DR site and boot it up - then go through the standard process to seize the FSMO roles (that is well documented, look on the main site here for the instructions). Voilą, one copy of the domain.

You can then do a DR install of Exchange to a machine with the same name as production and you have a copy of the Exchange org, minus data.
