  • exchange first install

    Hi,

we'd like to install exchange server 2003, we're currently using outlook without Exchange.
the first thing we need to do is move all the pst file on a network location. is there a way to automate this via a script or a gpo?

    thank you

    Re: exchange first install

PST files stored on a network is not supported. If the number of users is quite small I would suggest that you leave them where they are then when you visit each machine to configure Outlook to connect to Exchange you import the PST files through Outlook.

we have 250+ computers, is that the only way to setup Exchange in a non Exchange environment?

      thanks

        Re: exchange first install

It is the only way I would do it.

For the automated tools to work, you need...

        - to find the PST files, which may not be in the default location
        - the PST files in a central location
        - the PST files named in a specific way which is almost impossible to script
        - permissions to the mailboxes

You need to do all that in a short window while the users are unable to get email. Once any scripts you are using to configure Outlook take effect, the PST files will be lost on the machines somewhere.

I am in the middle of a 500 mailbox deployment at the moment and the client decided to hire two contractors for a week so that it can be done in a controlled manner. They are a financial services company and decided the risk of loss of mail or the mail going in to the wrong mailbox was too great.
