  • Temp. stopping services while an image is being created

I just bought some back up software (Acronis) that recommends the following:

"Please know, that Acronis True Image program uses a special method of "snapshot" image creation, it doesn't store the standalone files or directories, but saves blocks of hard drive data, saving the information about disk/partition geometry. We suggest you to suspend the work of
complex applications and serives (such as Exchange) during
    the snapshot creation process."

I found the article "Why does my Exchange 2003 server take 10 minutes or more to shutdown?"
    http://www.petri.com/slow_shutdown_o...lled_on_dc.htm

I guess I could make a similar script that stops services before image creation and starts the services afterwards.

But which services are most likely required to be stopped and in which order should they be restarted?

    Thx for the help

    ---------------

The script could look something like this:

    :STOPSERVICES
    ECHO ON
REM - While we are waiting for the main Exchange services to stop,
REM - Some peripheral services will be closed in the background.
start /min net stop MSExchangeMGMT /yes
start /min net stop RESvc /yes
    start /min net stop POP3Svc /yes
    start /min net stop IMAP4Svc /yes
start /min net stop NntpSvc /yes
start /min net stop SMTPSVC /yes

REM - Stop Exchange main services before shutdown to avoid timing conflicts.

    net stop MSExchangeES /yes
    net stop MSExchangeIS /yes
    net stop MSExchangeMTA /yes
    net stop MSExchangeSA /yes

    :STARTSERVICES
    ECHO ON
    REM - Starting peripheral services
start /min net start MSExchangeMGMT /yes
start /min net start RESvc /yes
    start /min net start POP3Svc /yes
    start /min net start IMAP4Svc /yes
start /min net start NntpSvc /yes
start /min net start SMTPSVC /yes

REM - Start Exchange main services before shutdown to avoid timing conflicts.

    net start MSExchangeES /yes
    net start MSExchangeIS /yes
    net start MSExchangeMTA /yes
    net start MSExchangeSA /yes

Stopping the services is a good idea.

The order to restart them won't matter. Windows will start dependency services automatically as long as they're not disabled.
