  • Restore Exchang after total loss -- Log Files?

Assuming that full backups are done nightly and those backups are taken off site.

The middle of a business day a fire starts that completely takes out the server hardware. The server and diskstorage that ran Exchange are gone, taking the DB files and Log files for the day with them.

Is it possible to make a complete or near to complete recovery of Exchange after a major disaster? Is is feasible to copy log files off site as the business day progresses and then use those log files during the restore of Exchange?

The objective of course is to recover as much data as possible between the time of the last full backup and the fire destroying all the equipment.

As we sit right now I have the bandwidth to copy the log files off site as they are created.

I know the log files are not meant to be moved like this, and also that this scenario is a long shot.

Any other ideas on how to recover from a disaster like this?

You haven't said which version of Exchange this is.
Exchange 2000/2003 does not have any kind of log shipping, therefore it would not be possible to replicate the logs off site.
Exchange 2007 does have a form of log shipping so you could do something to protect the data.
Another option would be to use something like DoubleTake, Neverfail or another one I cannot remember the name of. Those tools replicate the entire server, so the most you may lose is a few minutes data.

      Ahh, sorry.

We're using Exchange 2003 Enterprise running in a 2 node cluster.

2007 supports log shipping.....hmmm. When they originally setup the cluster they purchased 2007 but decided to run 2003 because 2007 has just been released. We can upgrade any time at no cost. This just might be the fire under out butts that gets us moving on this!

If you have waited this long I would wait a little longer until Exchange 2007 SP1 is released. That will make the transition to the new version easier for you.
However remember there is no in place upgrade options, so if you have a cluster you are either looking at new hardware or the use of temporary hardware to swing.
