  • Exchange forwarded to external pop account recieves duplicated email

    Iíve a problem with an exchange 2000 server (all patches installed) and forwarded pop3 mailboxes at an external provider.

    For some users I have forwarded the emails to a external pop account.
    (exchnage server, user, delivery options, foreward to : external pop3 account
    [v] deliver messages to both forwarding address and mailbox

    If the users receives a email with more then one recipients the identical email is forwarded multiple times.


    Example configuration
    Domain riverhouse.nl

    Exchange 2000 + smtp connector, forward all outgoing mail to a smtp server of the provider.

    Mailboxes:
    [email protected] + forwarded to [email protected] (pop3 account)
    [email protected] + forwarded to [email protected] (pop3 account)
    [email protected]

    Internal mail works fine, but mail receiving from external accounts are delivered multiple times depending on the number of recipients

    Example message

    to: [email protected]
    cc: [email protected]
    cc: [email protected]


    Local network exchange / outlook

    [email protected] : 1 message is delivered at exchange mailbox
    [email protected] : 1 message is delivered at exchange mailbox
    [email protected] : 1 message is delivered at exchange mailbox

    forwarded pop3 mailbox: [email protected] 3 messages are delivered
    forwarded pop3 mailbox: [email protected] 3 messages are delivered

    I think the multiple messages are generated by the exchange server

    How do you receive email messages?
    The only bug I am aware of that does this sort of thing is the POP3 connector. It could also be caused by something else on the Exchange server, AV, Antispam etc.

      you are pointing in the right direction.

      I'm receiving email from a provider using the standard smtp connector.

      i'm sending all mail to the smtp server of the provider.

      I can see the "duplicated mails" leaving my server.

      So it has something to do with the exchange server,

      i downloaded all pathes and searched in technet. No hints ....

        If the messages are being duplicated on Exchange then the usual suspects are antivirus and antispam applications. File level AV that hasn't been configured correctly can also cause this.

          Hi Simon, I'v tested the situation without the Virusscanner and Spamfilter. In both situation the same results.

            What exactly did you do to test those products? Did you simply disable them?
            If that is what you did then that isn't' a valid test. Due to the way they integrate with Exchange then only way to test is to remove them.

            Have you checked that the users haven't setup rules in their Outlook to do the same thing?
