    Exchange 2003 sp2

This past week I have had two particular outside emails that have been sent once but received multiple times with several internal users. The common denominator here is that both of these problem emails had many(7-10) attachments.

Example: outside email #1 was sent and received on Monday had 7 pdf attachments. The recipient received this same email 7 times in 4 days. I was able to verify that the sender only sent the email once.

It's like this email is going in circles within the system.

    Any ideas?

How big were these attachments? Maybe somehow the connection is timed out and the messages end up being re-transmitted.

      Thank you for responding.

The email with the pdf attachments totaled to be 7.5 megs. The email with the jpeg pictures totaled came to 7.9 megs. We routinely receive attachments totaling greater than 10-12 megs and never had any issue such as this in the past.

      This is most perplexing.

You need to look at the headers of the messages to see if the messages are 100% identical.
The problem you are seeing is quite common, often caused by interference of the SMTP connection. The sending server doesn't know the message has been received correctly so sends the message again. Firewalls are the most common culprit.

          Headers were identical.

Anyways, ever since a weekend reboot of the Exchange box the problem hasn't reappeared.
