  • Backing up exchange server 2003 transaction logs.

    Hi All,

I have single exchange server 2003 ent edt installed on Windows Server 2003.
I'm having Veritas Netbackup which takes incremental backup everyday and full backup every sunday.
Other than the incremental backup and full backups, I want to backup transaction logs can i do that and is that possible to do that????????

    Thanks in advance.............

No need to backup the transaction logs.
The proper Information Store backups are enough. It is an online backup and I suggest you the daily full option.

It is also important to keep the transactional logs and db files on different drives. it this way your server's performance is higher and a complete recovery chance is better.

As netxt said, no need to backup the log files if you do regular full online backups of the entire IS.

Why would you want to do that?

            Hii All,

These r the requirements of my organisation.

Does anybody have a valid microsoft document stating that the backup of transaction Log is not required on hourly basis.

Do i need to stop the store service to backup the transaction logs????

            Thanks & Regards,

Re: Backing up exchange server 2003 transaction logs.

The transaction logs are not designed to be backed up.
There is no kind of log shipping for Exchange 2003.
To get a full set of transaction logs you would have to stop the store, as it isn't just the log file that you need but the other files that will be in use by Exchange which control the log files and what is required.

Any reason you don't full backup every day? That is the only way that I backup Exchange - I don't do incremental for any site. If the databases are too large for the backup Window then you need to look at the database and back design, rather than trying to make Exchange work in a way that it isn't designed for.

As for documentation from Microsoft on not doing something, that is not going to happen. That would be like asking BMW for documentation on not crashing your car.

              Simon.
