  • can't add distribution groups to public folders

dear all, i have a problem with public folders and giving permissions to distribution groups.

it works fine for individual accounts, but not dg's.

i get the following error message when i try to add a dg.

    The operation failed
    ID no: 80004005
    Exchange System Manager

we are using exch 2003 enterprise, all patched.

its sitting on server 2003 all patched, on a dedicated server.

its a single server, not front or back end set-up.

i did have an issue admining the server from my machine, so i have been using mstsc to control and admin the server.

it sits in a mixed 2k 2003k server domain, all dc's are global catalogue servers as well. i have had this issue for a while, but its not been an issue as we never used public folders.

i am logging into the server with an admin account, and can do anything else on the server. i have looked into some solutions on google, but have had no success so far, i hope this is enough info for someone to help me.

    cheers in advance

DL could not be added as a security group on resource because it can contain contacts (emails without users in the domain).
You can only add security groups, so you change the DL to Security group (that can used as DL & Security) and by that - solve the problem.

hi, sorry i am confused now, i only get the option under client permissions to add groups from the GAL.

also when i create the groups in ad how would i create them so they are both distribution and security groups?

sorry to sound daft, but i wasn't aware you could have multiple group types under one group.

Re: can't add distribution groups to public folders

What you are looking to use is mail enabled security groups. These are only available to you if the domain or Exchange org is at a certain level - I forget which. See if you can switch the distribution groups you have now to security groups. If you cannot then the domain will not support them.

I don't create distribution groups at all. Al of my groups are mail enabled security groups so that they can be used for permissions and email distribution.

hi, no i can't change the type of group, so it looks like i will have to create a 2nd set of groups to control access and then use the new style for the new groups.

thanks i will test and let you know.

Rather than maintaining two sets of groups, just replace all of the distribution groups with mail enabled security groups.

hi, yes i had thought of that, but i was baulking at the idea of recreating over 200 distribution lists

mind you if i have to create 200 more i may as well fix it once and for all.

Re: can't add distribution groups to public folders

Do you have any Windows 2000 domain controllers?
                Any Exchange 2000 servers?

If not then switch both the domain, forest and Exchange org to native mode. You should then be able to change the group type.

Re: can't add distribution groups to public folders

we have 2 2k domain controllers.

i will look into migrating their load so we can upgrade them.

i have been putting it off as we had some issues with print drivers and them crashing the servers spooler. i will have to look for updated drivers.

i am testing out the mail enabled security group option at this point i am waiting for the group to show in the gal, i can use it to change permissions now.

                  cheers

Re: can't add distribution groups to public folders

hi, the mail enabled security group test worked so i can add the group and control the public folders.

my next issue is that i have created a test set of groups (sec mail enabled) and i can't nest them.

i can add people to the 2 lower groups, but its not allowing me to add any groups (sec or univeral dg) to the group i did try less than 5 mins after creating them, do i need to wait or am i missing something.

i think the univesal dg will not add as i am going the wrong way for nested groups.

security groups should nest though should they not?

                    cheers in advance

p.s. in addition when i edit a security global group, and try and add members it won't see any of the other groups that show in the gal, even the other security global mail enabled ones. however the security domain local groups will see them and would let me add them. if this helps explain anything

That is almost certainly down to your domain type. Only certain group types will nest - and I cannot remember the correct combination.
