I have exchange 2000 installed on win 2000 advanced server. suddenly I found my exchage's private database grows till it fills its whole partition size.and now the mail box store is dismounted..I tried to make offline defragmentation to reduce the size but the size still the same

    please help

your help is too much appreciated

Things like that do not happen suddenly unless you have a problem with the database.
It would have been growing over time.

Do you backup the server regularly?
What is your deleted item retention time set to?
How much free space is reported by event ID 1221 during the night?

How big is the DB? How big is the partition? How many logfiles do you generate each day? Are they stored on the same partition as the DB? Why? When was your last backup? And as Simon said (LOL) - what does event id 1221 say?

Re: exchange data base too huge

the DB Size is about 8.5 Giga after being huge but the normal size is about 3 giga.and my whole partition size is about 9 Giga Byte.I configured my server to use a circular logging.also I have configured it to keep the deleted items for zero days.the data base and logfiles are saved on the same partition because I have no other partitions.i have a full information store backup from 11th of SEP and I make a backup using exmerge on daily basis
also I think that you have to know that the same situation happened before and i solved the problem by defragmenting database

about the event details .it is shown below
        Event Type: Information
        Event Source: MSExchangeIS Public Store
        Event Category: General
        Event ID: 1221
        Date: 03/10/2007
        Time: 11:45:01 AM
        User: N/A
        Computer: dfg1600
        Description:
The database "First Storage Group\Public Folder Store (dfg1600)" has 1 megabytes of free space after online defragmentation has terminated.

Re: exchange data base too huge

Online defragmentation will not release "white space" nor will it compact the database size. You need to do an offline defragmentation to accomplish this, but it is not recommended as a regular "maintenance" task. Exmerge is not a sufficient "backup" method in the fact that you cannot restore Exchange from the contents of the Exmerge output. With circular logging you risk losing email if the server crashes and you have to restore from backup.

          My advice is this:

Invest in larger hard drives for the db files, get separate hard drives for the log files, start using NTBackup or another Exchange aware backup tool on a daily basis, turn circular logging off, and set your deleted items retention time to at least 7 days.

Using circular logging is a very bad idea. As you've been told, spend the few hundred $$$ needed to get your server some decent drives.

You have to defragment your database by using this Link

No, I believe we cannot do that.

When you get your new server, Google a bit, and if you cannot find anything (which I strongly doubt), do come back and we'll gladly tip you off.
