  • Outlook 2000 only setting client side rules

Connected to an Exchange 2000 server on Windows 2000 along with Outlook 2000.

However when I create a mail rule it will only create a client server one, so it only runs when Outlook is open.

How can I force this to become a server side rule?

    Cheers

    Dave

    What does the rule do?
Certain actions can only be done client side - not all rules can be run on the server.

Re: Outlook 2000 only setting client side rules

Basically this is a follow onto something we were trying to archive with exchange but could not get to work.

But basically all email gets delivered by smtp to the server and the email is delivered to the correct mail box and a copy is also sent to the postmaster, this is done in the back end of exchange somewhere and not through the Forwarding option in ADUC.

So we set a rule up when email arrives in the postmaster mailbox to a certain address we had Outlook delete it. While we could keep Outlook open on the server its not the most graceful ways of doing it, hence trying to setup a server side rule.

      Regards

Are you trying to hard delete it, not move the item to the Deleted items folder?
That is probably the problem. Try moving the items to Deleted Items first, then using a Mailbox Policy on the mailbox to keep the Deleted Items folder empty.

The other thing it might be is what you are using to fire the rule on. Certain values can only be done client side.

I am trying to perm delete it but will try sending to deleted items first. But the rule basically is:

          Perform on message arrival
If To is in the distribution list [Have select the right user]
          Then Permanently Delete the email
          End

          Cheers

I am pretty sure that permanently delete is a client side only rule. The server cannot do that. The server can delete the messages in to the Deleted Items folder - I have that happening in a number of places.

Changing it to Delete rather than Perm delete worked a treat
