  • Email delayed or fails to only 1 domain.....

I have a situation where out of the blue we are having trouble sending email to addresses @ bellsouth.net. I have confirmed that our reverse DNS is still properly configured as well as other DNS settings. this is the ONLY domain we are having trouble with.

I can go into the SMTP queue in Exchange 2003 and see the messages pile up. If I do a "Force Connection" the message usually goes on out fairly shortly thereafter.

We have 125 people constantly blasting out messages with this domain being the only problem one. I have called our ISP and our DNS host and they can't seem to figure it out. Also it is very hard to get in touch with Bellsouth if you are not a customer.

If I just let the messages to bellsouth.net sit they may or may not go out in a timely manner. It sometimes can take up to 3 days to send. It really is weird.

    Any suggestions anyone?

I think that either Bellsouth have a problem or have deployed something new. There are stories all over the place in the last week about Bell South and email delivery problems. Another site I work has loads of them. No solution to date. Sometimes sending the email through the ISPs SMTP server works, but sometimes it doesn't.

Email problems can be tough to track down. Try these suggestions:

Go to www.dnsstuff.com and run a DNS report on the bellsouth.net domain, maybe they are having DNS issues.

Run an email test for one of the recipient addresses and see if there are any problems with the recipient.

Perform an MX lookup at dnsstuff for one of the recipients domains (I'm assuming they are all bellsouth.net) and see if that shows any problems.

Go to their web site and look for a spam section, maybe they are "gray listing" your domain if they are seeing a lot of email from you. Since the emails eventually get delivered it doesn't sound like you are being blocked outright.

Make sure to check your own DNS infrastructure to make sure you don't have any issues. Perform an nslookup from your Exchange server for the bellsouth.net MX record and see if there are any problems. Check the smtp log on your Exchange server for anything going to bellsouth.net, you may find something. Finally, go to the Microsoft web site and search for "smtpdiag.exe". This is a command line tool you can run from your Exchange server to perform various smtp tests.

that is comforting....well kind of. LOL! I tried all of the stuff that joeqwerty said before I posted here with no luck. I figured it may have had something to do with the new AT&T or something since nothing here has changed and it is this one isolated domain. I just go in every hour or so and do a force connection on that particular queue and am good to go.

Anything else that we are not thinking of? Would it be worth calling M$ and dropping 250 bones just to confirm something really deep isn't causing the problem on my Exchange box?

If it is just that domain and no others then it doesn't seem worth a call. The problem would appear to be either with Bellsouth or Bellsouth's acceptance of your email.
