  • Outlook not sending and recieving outside network

Users are having issues with outlook 2007 being able to send and recieve emails outside of the network. I have tried setting pop3 accounts and https. We are using exchange 2003 sp2 on a single server and running winproxy as a firewall on a separate computer. The users can to a web login but cannot have outlook login from their laptops. Any suggestions would be most helpful.

Which method are you using to connect to the server from outside?
    RPC over HTTPS?
    VPN?
    Something else?
Has it ever worked? Remote features like RPC over HTTPS are not configured out of the box unless you are using SBS. You have to set them up and enable them.

Using outlook it used to only work using pop3. RPC over https has never worked and no vpn set up.

Re: Outlook not sending and receiving outside network

RPC over HTTPS is the preferred remote access option for Outlook 2003 with Exchange 2003 on Windows 2003. It provides the full access to the Exchange account without the need for POP3 or a VPN.

Things don't stop working for no reason.
Have you confirmed that the POP3 service is running, the port is open on the firewall.
Sending email uses a different protocol - SMTP. You have to specifically configure the Outlook client to authenticate when sending email.

            Showfire,

There are two ways to log into an Exchange mailbox from the internet:
            1. VPN
            2. WebMail
Using VPN, your users connect to the local network as if they were actually there in the building. They then run Outlook which is setup to access the Exchange server using SMTP. This is the best setup for notebook users. It also has the benefits of serving all server shares to the users, like printers, shared folders, etc.

The downside of this is that it needs to be setup correctly before it will work. VPN can be terminated at the firewall or a server configured for RAS. Either way, DNS needs to be configured and available to the VPN user. If they can not ping your servers by the server Netbios/FQDN name then you must fix that issue or Outlook will not work.

WebMail is accessible to all Exchange users from the internet using a browser. Normally your firewall will route port 443 (SSL) to the Exchange server so when your users type in https://webmail.yournetdomain.com.au/exchange, they are forwarded to the Exchange server.

Don't use POP3 unless you have to. POP3 will download their emails to Outlook on their notebooks and will delete the emails from the Exchange IS. If they lose their notebook- there goes their emails as well.

Re: Outlook not sending and recieving outside network

Thanks for all the suggestions and help. The VPN fixed the issue and found out while setting up access on the the users systems that stopped working they had screwed up their connections
