  • Priv1.stm very big

Hi all, now iam worry about the size of my first storage group of my Exhcange 2003 SP2. I was moving mailboxes from an old Exchange 2000 to a new Exchange 2003 server. The size of my priv1.edb is 20 GB and the size of priv1.stm is about 21 GB. I was thinking to do an online defragmentation but i dont know if can solve my problem. This server is new, it has about 2 months working. I know the the size of the DB will grow depending the messages storage on the server but in the ESM i see about 21 GB of all mailboxes.
    Thanks for ur help.

Check the 1221 event in the application log and see how much space you would be able to clean if you will run offline defrag
also check events 700-701 and verify that the online defrag finish on time (default between 1-5 am).

Without knowing how many users you have it is impossible to know whether a 40gb store is good or bad. In the general scheme of things a 40gb store is peanuts. Exchange can handle much larger than that.

As already said above, you need to look for event ID 1221 to see how much space you are going to gain. However an offline defrag should not be considered something that you need to do frequently.
If you are going to do an offline defrag then consider that the process runs at between 1 and 4gb per hour when you have total downtime, so on a 40gb store you could be looking at between 10 and 40 hours depending on hardware when Exchange is not available.

        Re: Priv1.stm very big

Hi, thanks for ur help. In a few hours i will go to the Exchange Server and i will search the event id 1221. I was reading in MS about the differences of the databases: EDB and STM, the EDB is for store headers, text (files that are sent by MAPI clients) and the STM store files like audio and video and other media. I have only one doubt, one month ago my DB size (edb and stm) was 21 GB and now is 41 GB, is there a possibility the corruption of my Database?? When i make a backup of this DB the backup finished correctly.
        thanks for ur help.

It could be from many reasons: employees didn't clean (delete items) their mailboxes or there is no limit on the user's mailboxes, there was a massive transport of large files between users, some mailboxes deleted but kept for 30 days default, new mailboxes were opened:

If the backup finished OK - most of the chances that the DB is OK and not corrupted:
