  • Exchange 2003 Global Address List (GAL)

Need to import a GAL into a new Exchange 2003 server.

We currently have the GAL in Excel format (was taken off an old Exchange 5.5 server).

How does one do the import?

Use ldifde / csvde in order to import to Exchange 2003 GAL (AD):

The GAL is built off user accounts, unless you mean external contacts. Do you already have the user accounts created?

The GAL is for external contacts.

I would advise against storing external contacts in the GAL. That usually doesn't go down well with the users and it is a pain to manage. Someone with quite high rights in the domain has to manage those contacts.

A better option would be to store them in a public folder. That way you can delegate the management of the contacts to someone else.

Now that's an option I hadn't thought of. For years, we've kept them in the GAL, and you are right, there are issues with the level of permission we need to give the Helpdesk.

            Cheers Sembee.

Re: Exchange 2003 Global Address List (GAL)

Although the GAL is for external contacts, they are the contacts for their other offices around the world. None of these offices are linked via Active Directory (and won't be), nor do they share any data between offices (other than email of course).

The GAL was fine on the old Exchange 5.5 server (now decommisioned). Don't worry about it being a pain to manage, the tech guy on site can manage it, it's just neither he nor I know how to do this import.

I've tried the following command csvde -i -f c:\filename.csv, but get the following error:

              Connecting to "(null)"
Logging in as current user using SPPI
              Importing directory from file "c:\testgal.csv"
Invalid file format. DN Attribute not defined
              0 entries modified successfully.
An error occurred in the program
              No log files were written

Is there something about the csv file that it doesn't like? Or is it something I need to set in AD?

If you have Exchange 2003 then you can share the data through a public folder as well, simply by replicating the folder to other servers.

The command itself is right, the problem must be in the way the CSV file is built. It could be a bad DN, a wrong object type or any other issue.
