  • SMTP Queue's filling - Please Help save my Boss' butt -

We got these new Cingular 8525 phones and in trying to enable them to send and receive email on our Ex 2000 Server he opened the relay now the Queue's are fill faster then he can empty them. The open relay is turned off now, but the Spam is still filling the queues. Many are form a .tw domain, Taiwan and another is Hinet, a China domain. Yahoo fills so fast it will not send for hours. Mail is going out to others but soon the entire server is effected.

    Suggestions would be appreciated,
    Thank you,
    ~Gig

I'd run a full virus check on the server too.

That blasted spammer has probably uploaded a virus that might be generating all that spam...

Your server/IP might get blacklisted too. It's kind of a pain to get off the black lists. Keep your fingers crossed that you don't get black listed. You will know you are blacklisted when some of your outgoing mail starts bouncing depending on what domain it is sent to. If you read the NDR, it will become clear.

If you haven't already cut off port 25 access to the outside world, then you need to do that first.

For assistance with clearing the queues, see my cleanup article here:
          http://www.amset.info/exchange/spam-cleanup.asp

If you have turned off the open relay you may see the queues continue to grow. This is because the ESM cannot cope with large numbers of messages in the queues (by large I mean 10,000s). When a spammer finds an open relay they will often abuse it as much as they can, so if it has been open a few hours it could have a lot of messages that Exchange is trying to process.
