  • Mail doesn't arrive from some domains

    We have the following problem:

When sending mail from some domains to our exchange mailserver it
doesn't arrive. If I check the SMTP server session activity I can
see the Ip adress of the remote domain and it is connected around
120-150 seconds, after that it just drop with this message in the
    logs:

    2007-05-18 08:01:04 xxx.xxx.xxx.131 - SMTPSVC1 RESEXS1 10.49.20.17 0
    QUIT - - 240 129204 177 4 129204 SMTP - - - -

(I have replaced the real IP with xxx)

    Nothing before and nothing after.

    We have checked the following

The server is a 2003 SP2 with exchange 2003 and GFI Mail Essentials.

We have unistalled GFI and the problem still exist.

The MX records is correct on both our and the customers domain.

They arent listed in any RBLs or so .

    Anyone has a clue?

    /Martin

Reverse DNS would have nothing to with the receipt of email - only sending email. As long as the server resolves correctly the email should be delivered.

Anything between the server and the internet? Firewall for example? Check whether that firewall has any SMTP scanning options - if it does, disable them.

Does the sender get an NDR? If so, what does it say?

Sembee Thanks for correcting me. I just cannot understand how can firewall be a cause for a single domain ?? do u mean to say that there might be some certain policies in the firewall which is trying to stop emails to certain domains ??

Re: Mail doesn't arrive from some domains

There are a number of firewalls on the market that have smtp scanning features built in - I have seen these cause problems with delivery. It isn't policies on the firewall, simply a combination of how two firewalls are managing the traffic. Their combination can stop the email being delivered correctly.

The same thing can happen with antispam or antivirus products. The combination of your product and the product on the other site can cause email to fail.
