  • Need help with SPF DNS Issue. Undeliverable Mail smtp:550 MI:SPF

I am receiving undeliverable messages from a domain with an error stating: “There was a SMTP communication problem with the recipient's email server. Please contact your system administrator. <servername.internaldomain.local #5.5.0 smtp;550 MI:SPF mx17,wKjSprC7b882Z1JG2LZWPw==.58150S2 1179805495”
This is the only domain that I am having an issue with, but users insist that they need to be able to send to this domain, so I need to address this.
I looked up this code on the domains website (they are an internet email hosting company in China) and it points to a possible issue with my SPF record. I looked up my SPF record and it is "v=spf1 a mx ~all". I ran a dns report at dsnstuff.com and it shows the SPF is fine. But, this may have to do with the way we have things are setup, which is as follows:
    MX record points to mail.externaldomain.com
My Exchange 2003 SP2 mail server is servername.internaldomain.local
My external domain name and internal domain name do not match. One is ABC and the other ABC123. This is in addition to the obvious com/local difference.
I am starting my research to figure what to do and would greatly appreciate any expert detailed advice on a course of action.

If your server is announcing itself as servername.internaldomain.local then that is a problem in itself. It should be announcing itself as your public name, not a .local.

Thanks, that was what I'm thinking. I tried changing the FQDN in the SMTP virtual server, but doing so resulted in incoming external email getting kicked back to senders with a message of

      <[email protected]>: mail for
      [servername.internaldomainname.local]:25
      loops back to myself

and I'm still trying to figure what to change to fix this. My incoming mail goes through a Barracuda and then to my exchange server. I can see the incoming message on the Barracuda and it passes it along but then I'm not sure.

Any detailed help would be appreciated.

That has to be something that the appliance is doing as I have never seen the error with a native Exchange deployment.
Is the appliance configured to announce itself as your correct external name? If so, can you not configure your appliance to relay emails from the Exchange server? Use an SMTP Connector and configure the appliance as the smart host.

MX points to my public IP, goes through a PIX, NATS to Barracuda, Barracuda passes good mail to Exchange, Exchange sends outgoing directly. The Barracuda only handles incoming and can only handle incoming.

I tried changing the Destination server address in the Barracuda to the exchange servers IP instead of name. Same occurence with a test message with the only difference being that it comes back with the IP instead of the servername.

You need to speak to support of the appliance then.
The Exchange server must either announce itself as the correct name or relay email through the appliance. I haven't used that device personally, so cannot comment on what is required to configure it to work correctly.

Changed the host name of the Barracuda did the trick. Sigh...
