  • Server 2000 with Exchange 2003 to Server 2003 with Exchange 2003

Hi everyone hope you are all ok, not been on here for a while, I'm a little stuck and thought one of you might be able to help.

i need to upgrade an Exchange server

currently it's running Server 2000sp4 with Exchange 2003

    the hardware is being upgraded

and the new setup will be Server 2003 with Exchange 2003.

i just cant seem to find any info on how to do this, ive found the technet article on
moving exchange 2003 but it wants the OS to be the same.
cant find anything on moving exchange and upgrading the OS.

one option is to use exmerge to export the mailboxes and then use it to import the mailboxes on the new server but what are the implications of this?

    any other ideas ??

    Thank you

I'm making an assumption that you are going to do an in-place upgrade of Windows from Windows 2000 to Windows 2003.

Along the way, you are going to upgrade the hardware, but you don't say what hardware you are upgrading.

I think that what you are planning is full of risk, if I've understood what you are planning, and if you are doing this on a live, production server.

Whatever hardware upgrade you are planning, might not go well. In the worst case, you might end up with the blue screen of death, and whole new levels of pain.

Your in-place upgrade to Windows 2003 might not go well, leading to more pain.

You could use exmerge, but where would you exmerge the mailboxes to? Another idea would be to bring down Exchange, and then run a backup (to at least ensure that you have a good backup, and that your logs have all been 'read' into the db successfully. And then copy the databases to another server before you do your work.

If I had to do this work, I'd build a new Exchange Server as a staging server and Mailbox Move your users over. This way you give your users the ability to keep working, it will be safer too and you'll be less stressed as you build your new super server.

      hi thanks for the reply,

its basically a hardware upgrade project,

ive got a new server, the old one is to be binned.
and they want to keep the same servername,

the mailbox move method would be the easiest but you cant rename the exchange server afterwards.

      currently im thinking
use exmerge (this is mainly just in case it all goes wrong)

      then take the mailstore offline,
      take a full exchanage backup
      take the server offline,
      bring up the new server
rename it, join it to the domain,
      install exchange,
      restore the database

This may be a job for http://www.swingmigration.com as the process keeps the Domain, Server and other related info the same as on the original server.
        1 1 was a racehorse.
        2 2 was 1 2.
        1 1 1 1 race 1 day,
        2 2 1 1 2

Any particular reason why the name needs to be kept?
If you can drop that requirement then a simple swing will do the job. If you insist on the name being retained then I would do a full swing, involving a third server - even a workstation would do the job.

My instructions on a swing are here: http://www.amset.info/exchange/migration.asp

thanks sembee thats exactly what i was looking for,

the main reason for keeping the same server name was so that i dont have to visit each pc to update outlook. but by the sounds of it this is not an issue.

That is the usual reason why people want to keep the same server name. For the benefit of anyone reading this question later and haven't looked at my article - as long as both the old and the new server are available when the Outlook client is started for the first time, Outlook will redirect automatically to the new server. No user or admin intervention required.
