  • Public folders replication between 2 ex2k3

    Hello,
I have a major problem, please help if you have any ideea.
I'm in the process of moving my exchange 2003 sp2 to a new server. The former sysadmin installed ex 2003 on the first domain controller and I want to move it to a server in domain. The old server will remain in domain but just as dc.

    Here is the setup:

    old exchange server:
    Domain controller
    windows 2003 sp1
    exchange 2003 sp2
    scanmail
    privmdb : 12.3 GB
    pubmdb: 100Mb

    New exchange server:
    server in domain
    windows 2003 R2 sp2
    exchange 2003 sp2
    GFI mail essentials

    Installation without any problems.
No errors or warnings in event log
Tested to send emails and receive emails. Ok.
Created a new user with mailbox in the new store. OK. Sends email to the other user no problem
moved a couple of test mailboxes from old store to new store. ok

    THE PROBLEM:

    1. I enabled the replicas for all public folders. BUT none of them replicates. !!!!! no replication in Offline Address Book...
NO replication at all. It has been 2 days
NO errors in eventlogs of both server. None
I have followed step by step the instructions from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822931
    2. if the mailbox is in the new store I do not have access to open it in outlook . It says "Unable to display folders"
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885924/
As per MSOFT Article ID:885924. That has been fixed in sp2 of exchange. I don't know how since I have sp 2 and still I have the problem. I called msoft for hotfix but they told me that does not exist anylonger

Please help me if you can

    Thank you

How did you configured the replications?

    1. Try the next link:
    http://www.msexchange.org/articles/P...eshooting.html
    2. I recommaned that you install Windows 2003 SP2 on the old server.
In general - verify that both (or all) Exchange servers including OS will have the same SP and hotfixes.
    3. On the next link see "Stopping and Resuming Public Folder Content Replication":

There you go windows 2003 sp2 on both exchange servers..
same result no public folders replication whatsoever and none, nada, zilch, errors in events logs.

            yes I did ...no result...same....

            no replication is happening...

I guess my solution is to call MSOFT... or to try to uninstall then reinstall....
the only thing that puzzles me is no errors in event log...

            Thanks

Re: Public folders replication between 2 ex2k3

              What does message tracking show?
Is the actual content going across?

I have seen GFI's products quarantine replication traffic before.
Have you tried the send hierarchy and the send content commands in ESM?

Replication traffic goes across port 25 SMTP, so have you confirmed that the servers can connect to each other?

pfmigrate is a just a script, it isn't the magic tool for migration. I actually don't use it in any of my migrations, as I can do everything that it does manually.

Re: Public folders replication between 2 ex2k3

                Thanks simon
there are no errors in the eventlog.
                the messages are working fine
                - between the 2 exchange servers ( one mailbox on the old exchange sends no problem messages to the new one and reverse)
                - no problem with sending out or receiving emails on both servers.
I will try to disable gfi antivirus to see.... but if the gfi has messages in quarantine is set up to send a message to the admin...

...you tried the send hierarchy and the send content commands in ESM?

                yes I did and nothing...
I even had hired a consultant to look at this problem...
The same answer ....he never seen this

He followed all my steps that I did in installing this exchange....he could'n see any error..
Before I did a test install in a testing environment and worked no problem...

I'm trying to think what is different and could influence..

there is one more hardware diff. the new exchange has 2 network card Broadcom in team for fault tolerance... that is the other difff...

as os... the new os is a win2k3 R2 sp 2 the old is win2k3 sp2

                I don't know what should I do...
Should I risk reinstalling everything or should I call msoft....

                Thanks ...

Re: Public folders replication between 2 ex2k3

Looks like your two problems might be related:

                    1. You can't replicate PF's from old server to new server.
                    2. You can't open up a mailbox in the new server from Outlook.

Here's a list of silly questions (sorry):
                    A. This is all in a single domain?
                    B. Sending mail. Can you send mail from a mailbox on the old to a mailbox on the new OK?
                    C. And from the new to the old?
                    D. Can you open up any mailbox on the new server?
                    E. Basic connectivity OK? Can you ping by server name OK?

                    End of Silly Questions!

                    On PF Replication:
You need to ask Exchange for more info. Try turning up logging in ESM on the following for the new server: Right click on the new server, and select properties. Choose the Diagnostics Logging tab. Go for MSExchangeIS\Public Folder and then in the right-hand pane, I'd increase logging to Max on General and on Replication Errors. Doing so should hopefully get you enough to do a Google to get to an answer.

On opening a mailbox on the new server:
I take it when you configure Outlook with details of the new mailbox, you are...
Firstly logged on to your PC as that person
Secondly, able to configure the server name and user name in Outlook OK? That is, you get the Server name to be underlined and the user name 'resolved'?

If so, then it might be a permissions thing. Again, turn up logging. Try MSExchangeIS\Mailbox and turn up General, Logon and Access Control. Hopefully that should give you some clues to Google or post back.

Let us know how you get on.

Re: Public folders replication between 2 ex2k3

I recently spent about 8 hours on the phone with Microsoft troubleshooting the same exact thing. The guy had me using a tool called pfdavadmin to try and browse the folders, etc, but we were unable to do so until we found the problem. You can download pfdavadmin at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

The problem ended up being that someone had changed the ports on the default website from the defaults in IIS. Check to make sure that the ports are 80 and 443 on the default website of the source server. Apparently, IIS plays a huge part in public folder synchronization.

Once these folders have replicated, your Outlook clients will most likely still be pointing to the old server for the public folders. You'll need to open Exchange system manager and expand until you get to the mailbox store on the old, "source" server. right click and go to properties. Pay attention to where it says: default public store. Make sure this is pointing to the new "destination" server. Once you have done this, test it by dismounting the databases on the old server and restart the outlook clients. If replication was happy, all should be good!

yes robbyb those are the problems.

                        answer to silly questions

                        A . yes
                        B Yes no problem.
                        C. Yes no problem
                        D. I can open with outlook. Or OVA. I cannot open the mailbox from the new server if outlook profile is pointing to the old one
                        E. No problem in connectivity by name or IP.
I will try enable more detailed logs

Yes no problems in configuring outlook...all server names and user names are resolved properly.

                        Thanks

                          Yes Jessrbird,
the ports on default IIS are 80 and 443.
and I can browse public folders from any of the servers with pfdavadmin

On the new exchange I have a certificate generated by instantssl and on the old one
by StartCom....Hope this is not the problem

                          Thanks

Does message tracking actually show the data being delivered to the store?
You should see the traffic going from one server to the other, then on the other server the traffic coming in and being delivered to the store.

I saw a problem last year which looks similar, where the traffic was being replicated across, but the new server was NDR the traffic and nothing I or Microsoft could do would stop it. We ended up rebuilding the domain.

                            Simon.

yes I can see traffic delivered to store...I have some mailboxes on the new server an d they receive or send emails no problem.

I also rebuild a new test exchange server on a different box....it has the same problems...so basically i think the error comes from my old exchange server
