  • Using Exchange Server as an SMTP forwarding/relay Server

Hello all, Ive had a look around the site before posting this but I apologise in advance if there is a post relating to my question.

I have been given the task of configuring exchange as a SMTP forwarding/relay server. My main points of interest are.

Is a log kept of the relayed jobs?
Are the messages stored (if so where and for how long)?
What happens if Exchange is unable to deliver a message - where are the errors written?

    Regards

Re: Using Exchange Server as an SMTP forwarding/relay Server

If Relay is your only concern, you can use windows 2003 server with SMTP only - no need to install Exchange.
If you start the SMTP log - you will be able to know when the message was relayed, from which IP, host, etc:

Even if you will use exchange for relay only - you will not be able to see the message, it is not stored in any place.

      Thanks for that.

Regarding failed messages. Will the SMTP logs also note the failed messages?
