  • separation between DC and exchange

I have a DC (with all 5 AD roles) with exchange server 2003 on a w2k3 standard.
I want to separate DC from exchange.
    How can I do ?
    Thanks in advance.

    Very simple:
    1. Install another DC.
    2. Wait for Replication.
    3. Check replication with Replmon and Dcdiag / Netdiag.
    4. Don't forget to config the DNS as Active Directory Integrated.
    5. Move all the roles to the new DC.
    6. Check replication with Replmon and Dcdiag / Netdiag.
    7. Verify that the Exchange is configured to work in the RUS with the new DC.
    8. Check in the ESM - Server - properties - Directory access that the Exchange
    9. knows the new DC.
    10. Remove the old DC using Dcpromo.

From what I read, MS doesn't support moving from DC to member and vice versa for Exchange servers. Will this work even though MS says not to do it?

I agree. Not supported, and it might actually get you into deeper trouble.

Install a new server, move mailboxes to it, replicate public folders, do whatever needs to be done to decomission the old Exchange server.

Then, if you have another DC and can take a temporary downtime of the existing DC, move all roles to that DC (FSMO, DNS, GC, whatever), DCPROMO it down, then remove from the domain and just format the machine.

Install Windows from fresh, and DCPROMO it if you want.
