  • Outlook unable to open after removing GC

    Hi all,

I was trying to move the Infratructure Master role from one DC to another and using Microsoft's advice I first removed the GC role from the server that was to become the Infrastucture Master. My Exchange Server then refused to receive mail and some users could not open Outlook at all. I assume this is because Exchange could not connect to the GC server but I do have other GC's on my network. Is there a way of forcing Exchange to connect to another GC immediatley and also if I left it would this happen over time anyway?

    Cheers

    Jim

Re: Outlook unable to open after removing GC

To follow up I moved the Infrastructure Master (IM) role back to the original server and turned the GC role back on to the server set to become the new IM and Exchange worked immediately. I am 99% certain it has nothing to do with the IM role but the GC. We are running a Windows 2003/Exchange 2003 single site environment.

I am aiming to decommission the server currently holding the IM role which is why I need to move the role. I believe in a single site environment I may well be able to have the IM and GC roles on the same server but Microsoft do generally advise against it.

How many Global Catalog servers did you have??

You MUST have at least one GC per domain.

I still had 2 remaining after I removed the role from 1. Perhaps a restart of the Exchange Services would cure it but not really the right time to experiment now!

As long as the Exchange server is not a domain controller, then it sounds like that you removed the GC role from the server that Exchange was using.
Exchange will go looking for another GC when the GC role goes, but it can take 30 minutes or more before it does so. The only way to force Exchange to look for another DC/GC is to restart the Exchange services.
Therefore if you are going to make this change again in the future schedule some time to restart the Exchange services and you should find that Exchange will operate correctly.

            Simon,

Thanks for that. I had assumed that this would be the case but just wanted an expert to confirm. Many Thanks for your help.
