  • Moving from one Server to another

    Hi All -

I am planning to migrate from SBS 2003 to Exchange 2003 Server. First, I am
going to use the Transition Pack to upgrade SBS to Windows 2003 Standard.
Then, move Exchange from the upgraded SBS Server to a new Server.

    I have the following questions:

    1. Would I need to re-configure Outlook on every PC once I move Exchange to
    a new Server?
    2. Do I need to prep the domain before installing Exchange on the new Server?

    Thanks for your help.

    1. You can use the next link, another way to migrate your exchange:
    http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/...ard-Part1.html
    2. Because you change the Exchange server's name, the outlook users will have to change their's profiles, you can use PRF files:
    http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/prftips.htm
    http://technet2.microsoft.com/Office....mspx?mfr=true
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/or...403051033.aspx
    3. You don't need to run domain prep again - if you migrate the exchange in the same domain.
You can use the "OrgPrepCheck" in the exdeploy command, in order to check it:

As long as both the old and the new server are alive the first time the users connect, you do not have to touch the workstations. Carry out a conventional swing migration using the move mailbox wizard and everything will update automatically. The users will not even know anything has changed.

        Simon.
        That is correct,
but later if old userprofile stored on the clients wil be used again, or if you reinstall Office using the old mst. Then when the old ExchangeServer is not available any more you do have to re-configure Outlook manualy or by PRF file. An other posibility i have used once is to make a cname for the new Exchange server using the name of the removed server.

Re: Moving from one Server to another

          Thanks for your responses.

Could you tell me if I migrate Exchange off of SBS first, then run Transition Pack OR do I run Transition Pack first, and then Migrate Exchange?

Also, what's the best way to migrate Exchange?

A lot of people have pointed me to the tutorial on mxexchange.org. But others have said to use the Exchange migration wizard....I am a novice in Exchange, and really trying to determine the easiest and the best way to migrate Exchange.

          Thanks again!

The transition pack just lets you install the components separately. It has no effect on the migration. If you have the full Exchange media then install that on the new machine, then service pack the machine.

The migration wizard is only for migrating to another forest. You are not doing that.
The best way to migrate is to swing. My guide on the process is here: http://www.amset.info/exchange/migration.asp
I think Daniel has a guide on his site somewhere as well.

              Sorry - my mistake:
Right: after move mailbox, you don't need to change outlook profiles - it is changed automatically....
