  • Exchange 2000 database size still the same after defrag

Recently, my organization has been having problems with the size of their mdb database. Several days ago they reached the 16GB limit imposed by Exchange 2000 standard edition and it's been a battle ever since. But, something rather curious has happened and I was wondering if anyone here could help me out.

Yesterday, I made all 60 users on my network delete unneeded mail. I'm getting this information of course from the Exchange System Manager. So at the end of yesterday, by my rough calculations based on ESM, I figure that the total size of all mailboxes is around 10 GB. I assume that until I run eseutil on priv1 .edb and .stm (respectively) that my database will still show a large size.

So after hours, I run eseutil and when it finishes I check the file size of the priv1 files and they pretty much the same!!! The .edb is around 8 GB and the .stm is around 7.8 GB!

So my question is, what in the hell is going on? Why does it show me in ESM the total of all the mailboxes to be around 10 GB, but yet after running eseutil /d is my .edb file still so big?!?!

Can anyone suggest a way to get decrease the database size? Is there an eseutil switch that does this better than /d?
    Thank you,
    Yosi

First I'd visually confirm that they have in fact deleted some email. Also, as an alternative to deleting email, I'd archive it instead. just in case.

What did event ID 1221 say overnight? That would indicate how much space you would gain from an offline defrag.

Is there a "deleted items retention policy"? If so, you may not see any benefits until the time period has elapsed and items are permanently deleted rather than hidden from the recycle bin.
