  • Message in SMTP Temp table not delivered

Some e-mails appear not to be delivered to their intended recipients outside our organisation. Such messages seem to be stuck in the SMTP Temp tables, but the Exchange Message Tracking Center suggests that the messages have been sent. The final event is:
'Message transferred to <Mail Server> through SMTP'.

Can I be confident that our mail server has tried to transfer the message to the remote mail server?

I suspect that the remote mail server is rejecting our e-mail, because the problem seems to be common to specific recipient domains. However, we don't get bounce messages. I know that there are occasions when e-mail delivery fails, and there's no bounce message, e.g. e-mailing to AOL accounts.

I've not seem any records in the event logs to suggest what the problem is. We've had other problems where e-mails have been stuck in the SMTP Temp tables that I suspect were SAV-related, but these were accompanied by a record in the event log.

    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    Try the next solutions:
    1. Diagnose the problem using SMTPDiag:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
    2. Check that you have PTR DNS record (ask your ISP).
    3. In order to isolate the problem, send email to the same recipient from an outside mailbox like gmail or hotmail.

      Thanks for suggestions.

      1. Following a recommendation elsewhere, I generated more detailed SMTP logs in Exchange 2003. Relevant entries were of the form:

      2007-01-15 09:10:14 212.137.44.179 OutboundConnectionResponse SMTPSVC1 [OurMailServer] - 25 - - 250+[TheirMailServer]+Hello+[OurMailServer].[OurDomain]+[OurIPAddress],+pleased+to+meet+you 0 0 103 0 21016 SMTP - - - -

Am I correct in concluding our e-mail was blocked?

      2. We've recently changed that DNS record to point back to our mail server (rather than one of our ISP's servers), so that hopefully isn't the problem.

      3. I'm checking using my private account.

Re: Message in SMTP Temp table not delivered

That looks like a blocked message. The "requested mailbox not available" is classic antispam filter message.

Put your domain in to dnsreport.com and see if it throws any errors.
