  • moving exchange 2003 installed on a domain controller to a new machine

    Hello
I have an exchange 2003 server installed on a domain controller. It is not the only domain controller though.
We have just received a new server and I need to move exchange to that new machine (btw currently it was running on a virtual machine).
I've looked at Microsoft KB article about moving exchange to a new hardware and keeping the same server name ( http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pro....mspx?mfr=true ) but that wouldn't work since our exchange is a domain controller.

I would appreciate any help I can get. I would really appreciate if you include as much details as possible -I've never done that before.
    Thank you very much

    Marek

Have a look at Swing Migration. http://www.sbsmigration.com/
    1 1 was a racehorse.
    2 2 was 1 2.
    1 1 1 1 race 1 day,
    2 2 1 1 2

Swing is the way to go.
As long as you have both machines running with Exchange installed when the users log in for the first time Outlook will automatically redirect to the new server.

My article on the process is here: http://www.amset.info/exchange/migration.asp

Take your time, do everything in the correct order. It isn't difficult, just cannot be rushed.

Use ADC connector, connect both servers parallely. GIve some other name to new Exchange server. And make new exchange server as a back door server.

I mean e-mails will be received by the old exchange and will forwarded to the new exchange.

After a week if you feel everything seems fine, remove old exchange properly.
i.e. demoting of exchange server and take new exchange at front end. change the ip of new exahcnge and give it the IP address of old exchange. But dont change the name.

You'll need to make appropriate changes in each user's Outllook. I am not sure if you give the same name it'll work at user end or not.

Remember *** If it's running on Windows server 2003, and if your existing domain is running on Windows 2000, active directory upgrades schema and its becomes all in 1 integrated box. When you create a new user in AD it asks if u also want to create mailbox for the respectiev user.

          Ok that all,
          Regards,

You don't need to use the ADC. That is for Exchange 5.5 to AD connectivity only. It is not required for Exchange 200x installations at all.

Changing the IP address of the Exchange server is a bit of a pointless task and just causes downtime. Not something I would recommend as a rule.

You also do not have to touch any user's Outlook. As long as both the old and the new server are running when the users login for the first time, Outlook will automatically redirect to the new server without any intervention from either user or network administrator.
