  • Additional Exchange 2003 server in same org. not working

i have a strange problem which i never faced when i was using Exchange 2000. the problem is as follows. I have old server on which Exchange 2003 server is installed and working perfectly. This server is a DC and a global catalog. Now i added a new server as a DC and a global catalog. I installed exchange 2003 joining the old exchange server in the same adminitrative group. when i moved some of the mail boxes to the new exchange server, those mail boxes can not send or receive any message. that is not only to the other mailboxes on the old server but not also with each other. the message just stay hanging in there. as long as all mail boxes are on the old server everything is fine. what do u thing is the problem?

The most common reasons for email delivery problems when a new server is introduced are

    - DNS issue - the server cannot resolve the other server and connect to it on port 25 using all three combinations - IP Address, NETBIOS name and FQDN.

    - Connectivity issues. Something blocking the connection. AV or configuration on the SMTP VS that restricts what can connect.

    - A Smart Host on the SMTP virtual server of the existing server. If you need to use a smart host then put it on an SMTP Connector.

I saw something similar one time. This might be a long shot, but make sure that your SMTP virtual servers are not configured to use a smart host. This only works in an environment with a single server. Smart host configurations should really be configured on an SMTP Connector.

        Dear Jmcbee,

Yeah this worked for me...after your recommendations. A smart host was configured on the first exchange's SMTP virtual server. that was the problem.

        thanks much.
