  • Exchange 2003 1 User email being marked read

I am running out of ideas on this one and hope someone has some advice on what to try next. I have one user whose emails are being marked read 4 minutes after they arrive on his computer.

Info: The Server is Exchange 2003
User info Win XP pro computer with Outlook 2003
    No PDA Push software installed

    Things I have tried.

1)Deleted the outlook profile and added it back.
2)Replaced computer with brand new computer, installed outlook and added connected to exchange server
    3) Made sure the "Mark Items as Read" under reading pane options was not checked.

    Any ideas?

Note, he does have pop/smtp email setup on this account at home. it is setup using outlook express.

    1. Have you trued telling the user to close his Outlook Express at home for 1 day (for testing)?
    2. Did you installed all Windows updates for Office and Outlook Express at home?
    3. If you have an Exchange 2003 Ent., can you move his mailbox to other Mailbox store?

      1) He has been out of town and I should also mention it is the owner of the company so I am very limited on how inconvenient I can be. I did try changing his password to see if that would stop anything coming from his outlook express at home but it didn't change anything.

      2) Everything was updated when I installed it, but I am sure he hasn't done any updates since then.

I think it is something remotely doing it. I just blocked pop3 at the firewall and sent a test message that hasn't been marked read. I didn't think Outlook express would do that, but I certainly could have been wrong.

If the user has Outlook Express set to download the email via POP3 with the "leave mail on server" option enabled then you would see this behaviour.
That setting does not leave the message unread on the server, because POP3 doesn't support that.

If the user wants to read email at home and maintain some kind of read/unread status on both machines then they need to use either Outlook connected to Exchange, probably using RPC over HTTPS as you are on Exchange 2003, or use IMAP. You don't want to use POP3.
