  • Reinstall IIS on Exchange 2003

I am currently receiving an error trying to access component services:

Error code 8004E00F - COM+ was unable to talk to the Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator.

I have found a few articles on the web (here included) but none of them resolve the issue. I was wondering what is involved in reinstalling IIS on an exchange server.

Obviously Exchange is closely tied to IIS and I was wondersing if it is even possible without killing my exchange installation.

    Any input would be appreciated.

    Thank you

The Exchanger installation changes the IIS commponents - therefore the IIS before the Exchange installation and after is not the same !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If from some reasone you need to remove the IIS - you should reinstall it from the Exchange installation by using the next setup option:
    setup.exe /disasterecovery.

I can't give you all the details, but I found out the hard way a few years ago in a similar situation that Exchange has it's own smtp service that replaces the one Windows installs. I had to find out the hard way by making a $350 support call to Microsoft

So do you still having a problem? if so, take a look at those:

Re: Reinstall IIS on Exchange 2003

Been to all those links and tried the ones that applied but no luck so far. it is an exchange 2003 installation on server 2003 standard R2, it is a brand new installation, not clustered.

it is driving me crazy, exchange appears to be working fine but I don't know what things that haven't been tested will not work. I discovered the problem when I tried to install the auto accept agent and it wouldn't let me in the component services/computers/my computer/com+ applications area (that is where it returns the error) I never noticed anything in the error logs because it doesn't record anything until you attempt to enter the area in the MMC.

obviously I am afraid to do any "experimentation" unless I know what I am in for.

Thanks for the input so far! I really appreciate it.

            1. Check that the service account is configured correctly.
            2. Check this one: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315296
            3. The next articke speaks about XP, but I geuss that the problem is with MMC:
            http://msmvps.com/blogs/bernard/arch.../22/39216.aspx
            4. Do you have any Exchange SP installed? if not - install Exchange SP1 and then Exchange 2003 SP2.

Re: Reinstall IIS on Exchange 2003

I tried the above, the first one was one I had tried earlier and the other one I just tried with no luck (couldn't complete due to asptxn.dll not existing, most likely because it is a file exclusive to XP). It is exchange 2003 with SP2 installed.

Re: Reinstall IIS on Exchange 2003

Apparently I fixed it, not sure of what combination of things I did but after restarting all the services for com+ and DTC it just started working, it must have been one of the many things I tried but I don't know which one since whatever I did didn't take until I restarted the services.

Thanks for all of your help!

This problem can resolve, step next bellow:

                  Verifie security permission this folder:
                  C:\WINDOWS\system32\MsDtc
                  This account Nt authority\Network Service, is present;

                  In Registry, change value
                  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSDTC
                  TurnOffRpcSecurity set 1

                  In Services, change Log On
                  Distributed Transaction Coordinator
                  This account NT AUTHORITY\NetworkService
                  Blank password
                  Restart Service

                  Return Registry, change value
                  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSDTC
                  TurnOffRpcSecurity set 0

                  Att.
