  • MSX2003 SP2 and IE7: ESM Help causes app crash

    Hello,

    System:
Windows 2003 SP1, Exchange 2003 SP2, IE 7, all Microsoft updates [as of today, 10.11.06].

    Problem:
From Exchange System Manager, attempting to access 'Help, Help Topics' or any context Help causes the application to crash.
One of three errors results - they all generate an App Event 1000:

    app: contentfilter.dll; module hhctrl.ocx; address 0x00013368
app: maildsmx.dll; module unknown; address 0x00d2e6b1
app: exadmin.dll; module unknown; address 0x00d0fd11 (varies)

This happens on 2 servers - I think this it's due to IE7:
the reference to hhctrl.ocx; MSX 2003SP2 servers without IE7 are unaffected.

I've seen one post re: this problem (though my server isn't SBS, like theirs):
    http://groups.google.com/group/micro...x&rnum=1&hl=en

Has anyone else encountered this problem/got any tips, please?

    Cheers,
    Pete.

does it do the same thing when you try to browse the HTTP virtual directory via ESM?
i was having the same issue you had... and in addition when i tried to browse the HTTP VS via ESM it would give me "no application associated with this file type" error... which is crap cause you know the file type is registered... had me for a bit...

the update seemed to fix these problems for me, as it has not happened since.

          Hi James,

          Thanks for the reply.

No, I don't get any problems browsing HTTP virtual directories via ESM.
However, while browsing through ESM's objects (not exhaustively) I have just found another 'error':

On expanding Administrative Groups, 'main site', Folders & selecting 'Public Folders', I get the following error:

          'Exchange System Manager:
          The operation completed successfully.
          Facility: Win32
          ID no: c0070000'

Responding 'OK' (the only option) continues and everything seems fine.
This error only appears once per ESM run.
It doesn't occur when browsing server Public Folder Stores.
It doesn't occur on non-IE7 systems.

          Cheers,
          Pete.

I am experiencing this same problem on 2 different machines, both with IE7.

            Has anyone found a solution?

              Check this one: http://www.webservertalk.com/message1716219.html

I know that it maybe can't help you, but probably it is an IE7 problem so just remove it

Re: MSX2003 SP2 and IE7: ESM Help causes app crash

                Hello,

On a test server: uninstalled IE7, restarted & can confirm both ESM Help and Public Folder errors no longer occur (with IE6).
However, I'm not keen on doing this on production servers - I'd expect a more useful MS fix/workaround.

BTW, I also posted in the exchange.admin group - others also have this problem.

I'm also unable to access help pages from within Exchange System Manager after the latest round of updates.

The only solution I have found is to uninstall IE7

Re: MSX2003 SP2 and IE7: ESM Help causes app crash

Well I decided to bite the bullet and install IE7 on a new server I was commisioning.

I assumed the Exchange System Manager help problem was a rarity and proceeded to install IE7 on a brand new server.

I have now waited 20 minutes and the display is still stuck on "Setting up personalized settings for Internet Explorer" after the reboot.

My faith in Microsoft's QA is rapidly diminishing....

                        My present recommendation is:

DO NOT INSTALL IE7 UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES ON YOUR SERVER!!!!!!

Oh and in case you were wondering Exchange system manager help is now defunct!

Ha s anyone managed to access ESM help after installing IE7?

Microsoft latest attempt (released yesterday) at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=924334 still doesn't fix the problem.

Ok, last I heard from a Microsoft guy is that they're aware of it, and they're working on a fix. I will post the moment I hear something I can publically share.
