  • 8026 Events on Exchange Server 2003 LDAP Bind was unsuccessful errors.

We are getting errors on our Exchange Server 2003 like this below at least once a day. When they do occur the errors are logged at a rate of 10 per second. These error storms last for about 10 minutes and go away. I don't have to reboot the server; the errors just stop. I did not have to apply MS KB 272552 since my RUS was already set to my DC. Any ideas on what to check next? The only thing I altered in this error below is the Computer: (changed to SOMECOMPUTER) and the FQDN (changed to SOMECOMPUTER.SOMEEXCHANGESERVER.COM in the Description
    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: MSExchangeAL
    Event Category: LDAP Operations
    Event ID: 8026
    Date: 10/25/2006
    Time: 11:47:55 AM
    User: N/A
    Computer: SOMECOMPUTER
    Description:
LDAP Bind was unsuccessful on directory SOMECOMPUTER.SOMEEXCHANGESERVER.COM for distinguished name ''. Directory returned error:[0x51] Server Down.

    1. Try reboot the DC.
    2. Check the connectivity between the Exchange and the DC using the next tools:
Dcdiag, Netdiag, nslookup and replmon between the Dcs (if you have more then one DC).

      Thanks...
Some more things I have noticed from looking at my event logs...
      1. The error storms seem like they occur most often during the 11AM hour.

Here's what I'll try when it happens again...
      1. run netdiag/dcdiag on both machines...
      2. see if each machine can ping each other

Results of dcdiag done on the mail server during one of these error storms this morning...
dcdiag also failed on all other machines I tried it on...
I ran dcdiag again about 20 mins later and it passed.

              That looks like DNS errors.
Make sure that you are using ONLY domain controllers for DNS. There should be no external DNS servers anywhere in the network configuration of any machine on the network. If you need to use external DNS to get effective external DNS resolution, then use forwarders on the DNS server applet on the domain controllers.

Also check for effective replication of the AD DNS zones on the domain controllers, as the error you are seeing is looking at the AD zone.

We cleaned up some DNS settings and everything seems to be working. No error storms on the Exchange Server. Thanks.
