  • Delivery status failure 5.1.0 unknown address error 553

Company "A" is sending emails into my company "B".

Everyone at A can send emails to B with the exception of one user at company A.

He has said he gets the following error when replying or sending directly to an email anyone from comapny B:

Delivery status failure 5.1.0 unknown address error 553 "requested action not taken" mailbox name not allowed or chunk to long

This user says he has an appostraphe in his name, which i recall caused a similar problem in exchange 5.5. The resolve was to get the sender to recreate their email address without the appostraphe. He went onto tell me if we sent an email to him with or without the apostraphe it would get to him...

Other than my thoughts on this can anyone explain what the error message means and what else could be the problem.

I am pretty sure that chunk too long is not an Exchange message. Therefore it means that something in between is coughing over the apostrophe.

As a rule I don't make the apostrophe version of the email address the default. I will add it to the account as an alias so anyone sending an email with the apostrophe included gets their message delivered correctly, but all messages originated with the user will not have the apostrophe included.

Therefore I would suggest that the email address is adjusted to remove the apostrophe to ensure that email behaves correctly.
