  • OWA not starting up

    I have Exchange 2003 SP2 on a Windows 2003 Sp1 server.
I'm not sure what is going on but OWA has been "rock solid" for over a year now.

I recently had an issue on a seperate Blackberry Enterprise Server where the calendar was not synch'ing. I upgraded the Exchange System Tools to SP2 (so that cdo.dll files would match). I also granted my "besadmin" increased rights to the mailbox store.

This was all per BES support recommendation and everything worked fine.

The last 2 days, since i did this change, OWA stopped working. It says, page cannot be found. Last night, I read a technote to restart IIS - I did this and OWA came right back up.
Tonight, I tried the same thing but no luck. IIS does restart nicely, but OWA is not coming back up.

My next step is to reboot my exchange server but it's currently doing backups - so need to wait.

Does anyone have any suggestion as where to look or what to do in this case?

My fear is, i did something to trigger this and a reboot (if it works) would only be a temporary solution.

Any input would be greatly appreciated!!!

    Thanks!

      Thanks for your suggestion.

I had one of my developers look at this today, and he mentioned that IIS is completely not working.

He suggested reinstalling IIS on the exchange box.

Is this not recommended on an exchange box?

      Any other suggestions?

      Thanks!!!!

It looks like POP is not working either. I believe this is all related to IIS not working on this machine.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions!

        Thanks!!!

            Re: OWA not starting up

Funny thing is, no errors are in the event log for this.

Even when I restart IIS - it just restarts successfully.

Funny thing is, no websites on this server work.

It seems like IIS is in a weird state.

I will reboot tonight, but i'm not sure if this will help at all or even be a permanant solution to my problem.

Someone suggestion reinstalling IIS 6.0, but how do i do this without losing my owa settings, and other settings.

            Any suggestions will be appreciated!

            Thanks again!!!

              Re: OWA not starting up

It's bad news if you need to reinstall IIS...
              http://support.microsoft.com/kb/320202/
If you have to reinstall Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) on the server that is also running Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server or Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, you have to reinstall Exchange at the same time to restore links to IIS that provide Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) and Outlook Web Access (OWA) functionality.

                Re: OWA not starting up

Thanks for the reply about IIS (that will now be my last resort).

I rebooted the server last night and everything seems to be stable so far.

I'm just worried that if the issue becomes reoccuring, then what my course of action should be?!?

Thanks again for you help and I'll keep you posted.

                Thanks!!!!
