  • Stop users browsing Global Address List in Outlook 2003

    Hi.

I am pretty desperate for some assistance on this.

We are a school and have just implemented an Exchange 2003 system.

We want to be able to block groups of users from being able to browse the Global Address List in Outlook 2003, and even from searching it.

We still want these groups to be able to email any user listed on the GAL, but only by knowing the address first.

    How can I do this?

    Thank you

    Paul

if you dont have that many users then try the "hide from exchange address list" check box. you can do bulk with ADmodify...

if not, then make a custom GAL that lists nobody... just set some null attributes and set it as the default to be shown... and set the permissions to read only... and they see nothing and can change nothing.

im just a toddler when it comes to this exchange stuff.. im sure the guys here have a better way...

    just my two packets.
its easier to beg forgiveness than ask permission.

You can use ADModify or GALHider (Global Address List Hider) to hide entries in the Exchange address list. See http://www.dummysoftware.com/galhider.html

How are your users accessing email?

If it is OWA ONLY then hiding the users from GAL will be fine.

If it is Outlook, then it will cause a problem.

If the user is hidden from the GAL then Outlook cannot create the profile. It has to be able to see the user.

Furthermore, you will be unable to restrict users from viewing the GAL as that stops Outlook from doing what it needs as well.

        Simon.
