Well, where do I start when asked to say a few words about myself? It is the kind of request that suddenly you find can be trickier than what you originally think.

My name is James and I am 31 years old. I am originally from the county of Lincolnshire in England but now live in Surrey and work in London. My original aspiration was to work as a TV Director. When at Secondary School, we were required to do 1 week’s work experience and I wrote off to the Central TV studios (ITV1) in Nottingham and at the age of 15, was an assistant to an assistant camera operator.

My College and University studies were geared up towards moving into the Media industry. I was very much an end user of computers and was being exposed to packages such as Macromedia Director, Photoshop, and Quark Express etc.
On graduation in 2000, I decided to take a graduate position as a roofing estimator. Naturally what you do when wanting to move into television production!!! Whilst carrying out that role, I found myself helping users with their computer problems. I decided to read a book on computer hardware and I then attended a part-time, City and Guilds IT Support Technician course. This made me decide to start a career in the computer industry.

My first role was working in a call centre providing hardware support over the phone. Support was purely over the phone and there was no ability to remote in to customer’s computers. A short 4 months there allowed a stepping stone to a position of laptop technician at a school with 2200 users, 700 laptops and 400 desktops. I was the only laptop technician. I spent some 4+ years there and moved into 2nd line Support during that period. They also carried out MCSE training to external people and I attended an MCSE: messaging course, obtaining the qualification in 2006. I carried on self studying for other qualifications. This included WSS3, MOSS, Exchange 2007 MCITP and so on. I am now MCITP: EA and became an MCT last year. I am currently studying towards my CCNA.

I currently work in the heart of London as a Senior Technical Consultant for a Microsoft Gold Partner. The work is varied and I am exposed to a range of technologies.

In my spare time, I enjoy helping others on the Petri forum as well as going to the gym, hiking, camping, socialising and other ad hoc escapisms.

I continue to support the Petri forum as I have learnt a considerable amount from it and have received help myself on many occasions.
