  • How about an "Auto Close" feature on old threads?

If a thread hasn't had any activity for 3 months (or ???), let's automatically close it. That way we don't get first time posters responding to year(s) old threads.

Disable "Auto Close" for Sticky Threads or, better yet, see if you can get "Auto Close" added as a separate attribute of the thread (defaulting to TRUE).

If someone wants to reference an old thread they can "Quote" the post and copy / paste the guts into a post on a New thread.

    Thoughts / comments?
    Cheers,

    Rick

No ability to read minds. Just seeing the very evident need and wondering how to help motivate a solution.

If you create a secret vino forum, I want in. Beer has too many kcals.

And what about unresolved cases? Why close the threads?

Perhaps we could all manually close threads as we see them solved. Perhaps I could add a forum rule, a guideline, that'll require the original person to open the thread to also provide feedback, and if they don't, they're history. And after they provide feedback, force them to close their own thread, if not, again, they're history.

A similar method is used in the experts - exchange forums. If we all think this is a good idea we could make it work, and slowly people will adapt to the system.

Unresolved for 3 months = cold case = dead.

You can mandate all you want but look and conformance to the current, simple rules -- it won't work.

If a mod / admin sees a thread that should be left open, change the "Auto Close" property from the default TRUE to FALSE.

This is a game of percentages and the exceptions are small compared to the rule.

manual closing all those threads will be a lot of work for al the mods and admins.
Personally i think it's better to automate this process, and if needed we always can open the threads.
