  • Gone to war

Hi folks. It's been 6 days since I was called on emergency military duty. I am part of an infantry brigade and the war in South Lebanon and the Gaza strip has caused us to mobilize troops.

I came back today for a quick weekend leave. I need to go back next week.

Guyt has also been called today, and he too will go up north to join the fighting forces.

That will leave the forums without any administrator on board. That is why I've nominated one of our older members, one of our great and hard working moderators, someone that's not likely to be called to military action soon (or ever, if I come to think over it, unless Great Britain launches an offensive against the Japanese forces in the near future... LOL) - Biggles77 (aka Chris).

Beware, Biggles77 is quicker on the ban and delete button, much faster than me. Read the forum rules BEFORE you post, otherwise it'll be a blink of an eye and you'll be out of here, for good.

We're hoping that this war situation will end soon, and that we, and all the other fighting troops will come safely back home. Wish us best of luck.

I hope everyone gets home in one piece. That applies equally to both sides of the conflict.

                    Re: Gone to war

Yesterday I've been notified that Nimrod Segev, a well known Israeli Microsoft employee (the one that coordinated the Windows Vista track in the Israeli Tech-Ed event) was killed in combat action two days ago. Our Israeli readers might know him from the numerous events he has had all over the country.

Nimrod left a wife and two children. He was killed when his tank was hit directly by an anti-tank missile.

I am fine so far. I haven't spoken to Guy in 3 days. On the other hand, his name didn't come up in any news event, so I guss he's fine so far.

                        Daniel,

Thank you for your very fascinating updates. I have been forwarding them on to my family members.

I am curious- is it mandatory that everyone of able body, in Israel, be in the reserves? Or is it optionally something you volunteer for? I have heard that everyone in Israel is required to take a "tour of duty" in the army but I didn't know how the reserves work.

                        Take Care Daniel & Guy!

May you both come home soon!

                            Re: Gone to war

Everyone is supposed to server for 3 years - 18 to 21 (women do 2 years). However, as it turns out, some manage to get away (mental, physical, health issues and so on).

Every male that served his 3 years is *supposed* to be in the reserve army, however here more manage to get away, and only around 20-30% of the men do that regularly. In cases of emergency more men volunteer, but basically the ones that get called are the ones that were good enough to serve in the fighting forces in the first place, i.e. infantry, navy, air force pilots, armoured cores and so on.

Darvin is at his best here. The ones that eventually die are the ones that were called to duty, and since these are the ones that were good in the first place, then only the good and brave and potent men die. This leaves the *rest* of the men, the ones that either got away by faking documents, the ones that had health issues, the ones that have a means to get out - to continue the race...

                            Life sucks.
                            Cheers,

                              Hi Daniel,

That is very interesting. I was wondering how all that works.

Take care of yourself & hang in there!
