  • 700 TB created each day

I was reading this article from NASA. A project they expect to be completed in a couple of years time will produce 700 TB of data per day. And that's just one of their projects. Mind boggling!

That'll be photoshopping the next set of moon landings then
Might get the shadows right this time

Seriously, kudos to them for the job they do

Hmmm interesting job. Maybe I should move and have a job interview over there

The first thing that popped into my mind was how on earth do you go about backing up that amount of data. Is it split up into manageable chunks with many backups being undertaken? As I've only worked in a small network I've no idea how you'd do this.

But to deal with that amount of data...

Well, if the line speeds are high, you could replicate the data on an incremental base to offside location. Maybe on an hourly scheduling.
When it's on the other location, you can again replicate it or use large taperobots to back it up.

Blood, Blood, Blood, Blood, Blood. All you need are a couple of floppy discs about 24km in diameter. Think outside the box man.

Thinking outside the box, how about giant optical media, plus a few sharks with lasers

Now you are just being silly. Think of all the drag/friction that the water will create on the optical disc. The motor to drive it would have to be massive or are you going to genetically engineer some air breathing sharks. Click image for larger version

Oh, maybe a few 3,5" floppy disks would work?

I can't get you sharks. Will Sea Bass do?

Interesting problem though, we have a customer who's data grows by 6-8gb per night and we have enough problems getting all of that backed up.
