  • Thinking of quitting IT...

    ..

Yes i'm thinking of quitting IT. I've spent the last 7-8 years in some kind of IT Support role and now its starting to piss me off! I never seem to get anywhere. Install a new system (Windows, Exchange, SQL etc...) get it working ok, sort out all the problems, patch it, service pack it, change registry entry etc... then along comes the next update and you go through the process again!

In my current job when anything major goes wrong (e.g. Before summer holidays printing died... so in about 45 mins i had managed to move all printing (over 100 print queues), including our print credit system to a virtual server. Second problem in 24 hours our web filtering software stopped worked... down to me to come up with the fix otherwise our college students would soon find out they could get on porn etc..!)... well basically anything goes wrong its down to me to fix... besides me being one of 2 network managers and my boss who is the IT Manager (paid 2x my annual salary!)! Our helpdesk isn't helpful at all! We get some real simple first line, first call resolve calls put through to us...

So im starting (well have been for some time) of thinking of quitting IT. Im tired of fixing problems... i know thats the nature of the job but the fixes seem to get harder (thanks to this forum it has kept me going longer otherwise i would have quit a LONG time ago!). What does everyone else think? Am i going about things wrong or have other people thought of getting out of the thing that supposedly everyone wants to get into because there is loads of money in it!!!! Fools!!

    And what would you do?

I wouldn't do any thing I didnt enjoy. You could always further your education to get a more challenging position but from reading your post thats probably not the best Idea for you.

Tony, you might want to move to a bigger company where the seperation between the various support lines is much more clear. This has the added benefit of having more colleagues to support you and learn from. The obvious disadvantage is added red tape.

To Biggles: Don't know just yet but as im not paid a lot there are a few career paths to take... thought of going back into teaching.

To MCSE1982: It is challenging enough doing what i do so you are right saying it is probably not for me. If i wanted a challenge id stay.

To wkasdo: That is true in all aspects... but i have also done that and left because i didn't have enough variety to keep me occupied plus where i live is like a barron place for IT. Only about 4 companies with 300+ employees and all are pharma companies (Smith and nephew, Reckitts and Benckieser, BP etc..).

Well i'm very close to typing my leaving letter. I dont know if ill have a change of heart but one main reason for changing what i do is that my partner gets annoyed everytime i come home and complain. She doesn't want to hear about how shit it is for the 700th time. She wants me to do something about it. And as the college where i work probably wont hire any more qualified people... then im left with little else to try!

Thanks for the comments guys... all welcome

Tony, I think anyone that is long enough in the field has had those moments when you say to yourself: damn it all ! I'm out of here !.
But then you stumble upon a new challenge, crack it up and feel good with yourself.
The only question that I think is relevant when talking about choosing the job is "Do you really like what you are going to do ?"
Money can be a nice bonus, but personally I would not be in IT, if I didn't like what I am doing (with all the ups and downs).

Trust me that I know how it is to be getting those stupid support calls. I am currently working at a small research site of a real big global company, and though I get to do some very cool things related to infrastructure architecture, I am still getting those "my Office is stuck and my icons have disappeared" calls from time to time.

As Willem has already said: you might want to consider looking for a job with more responsibility separation. Yet I wouldn't be quiting something I do love to do just because of those annoyances (and it you don't, that's totally a different case).

Don't expect moving around to change the nature of the job. If you really don't like it, then leave it. Life is too short....

I've been doing IT for 40+ years and still enjoy most of the work, so I plan to stay with it.

Whatever you decide, I wish you good fortune.

To GuyT: Its not the dumbass calls i get that bothers me so much, its the fact i shoudn't get them!

Thanks to all for your help and suggestions. It is going to take some soul searching to make a decision. I spoke to a Vice principal today about it and she made it clear that im highly valued and wants to help where she can. This has helped my confidence and its nice to know that someone else who works with me knows and can try to at least help.

Thanks again guys, im sure ill keep you all posted!

EDIT: To Biggles77: Im considering that but i would need to update my teaching qual and that would mean time without money... i cant afford to do that at the moment. But im looking for help with that.

Glue sniffing does that. (So I am told, of course. )

Thats one way of making IT Support roles bareable!!

                          What is the best brand?

Well it has to be Araldite! Blows your head away!!

On the serious note of "Thinking of Quitting IT"... i took some of the advice given and mixed it with my own ideas. I now try to stress about work less, if something breaks - it breaks! I do less work on an evening... (Hence my low post count recently i guess!) Let other people do some hard work instead of feeling it has to be me all the time... whilst this was hard to in the first place.. it is making things better. And overall im trying to smile more and enjoy my job a little... and so far so good... its working.

Plus there is the small point that there aren't any jobs that pay a similar wage that i could 'walk into'!

Ill give you an update in another month, ive booked a few days off (5 day weekend) for the end of this week so that will help relax me more.

Thanks for the inquiry... nice to know i'm not forgotton about!

i know what you mean. i have the same issues driving me up the wall every day.
especially users who are requesting something they don't even know what it is they are requesting. and helpdesk agents who can't figure out what the user really wants.

u wouldn't believe the kind of crap i read in the tickets every day
Yesterday we stood at the edge of the abyss. Today we are a step further...
