  • The universe is winning the war on spam

It might just be me but.....I just checked spam levels at various clients, it seems we are winning. Spam levels seem to have dropped significantly.

    Anyone else notice this?

Guy: Forum seems snappier and congrats on the new favicon.

The global economic crisis might be affecting the spammers

Re: The universe is winning the war on spam

If anything I would have thought an economic crisis would increase the level of spam (if that's even possible - our mail traffic is already 99% spam, thank god for Exclaimer). After all, there's far more people concerned about money for the Nigerian president to get in touch with

I mean, if they have these millions that they want to share with me, why do they need "a small sum" from me to help get things moving?

        By jove Lior is right!!!

I've just run some reports and November this year is down by 36% over November last year.

The credit crunch has been good for something then!!!

Re: The universe is winning the war on spam

Our spam has stayed between 30 - 55% over the last 4 weeks or so based on 2m messages per week.

I think a botnet got "shutdown" recently from memory reading on the Register so this may be part of the cause. I doubt we will ever win with the internet and smtp protocol how it is though.

A botnet getting canned would do it. To be honest, sending email in bulk costs so little there's very little Gordon Brown can do to stop it, no matter what he does to the British economy

I think i read on El Reg or somewhere that a spam site had finally been blocked at source or dropped completely by their ISP which resulted in something crazy like a 75% drop in spam!!

mind you, seems someone likes our domain this week as we've seen a huge jump in spam. The annoying ones are the NDRs for when addresses have been spoofed as they're real e-mails they just whistle straight on through :*

Lior, remember that perhaps it's because of the new Israeli anti-spam law...

Well that's a shame. I personally like Spam especially the new Turkey flavour. Not too keen on Spam Lite but it does go well on pizza.

                    Oh, what's that, wrong Spam?

Yes, a major US spam farm got shut down by their ISP late last month. They have already found a new ISP and will be back to full strength by the end of the year.

For those interested, search for "McColo Corp." and include other reasonably related keywords like "offline", "shutdown" or "Spam". Here's one of many interesting news story about it. Spam levels are apparently already back on the rise.

190 BILLION spams a day? Whoa.

Read an article some time ago that said 80% of Internet traffic was spam and porn. How accurate this figure is I don't know.
                              1 1 was a racehorse.
                              2 2 was 1 2.
