Re: Happy Sysadmin day to everyone

I know what it is but it has no attention here in the Netherlands.
Quite sad actually if you know there is a lot of attention for the Secretary's Day.
Well I don't bother it. I don't do work as a system admin anymore.

Hopefully you all received a nice cake from your boss?

Re: Happy Sysadmin day to everyone

What a good idea! Happy Sysadmin day to you all!

Does anyone have any good stories to tell that would map to the categories that OpenDNS is offering prizes in? Quote:
                  Best Disaster Response Award

A hurricane, a fire, an earthquake. A datacenter meltdown. Something that would have caused business operations to shut down completely, if it werenít for this SysAdmin. Like a knight in shining armor, this SysAdmin managed to keep the network up and running.

                  Unbelievable Uptime Award

SysAdmins take pride in total uptime and this SysAdminís router has been up for years. Heck, itís been up so long he/she might not even remember where it is. Wow the judges with a number of straight days of uptime.

                  Shoestring Budget Award

This SysAdmin works wonders with a seriously tight budget. Tell us about the SysAdmin with the craziest buildout done on the cheap. We need details for this submission - tell the judges specs, total cost and what kind of awesomeness it powers.

                  Flying Solo Award

Even with a team of talented operators, SysAdminíing is not easy work. But when flying solo it can be downright heroic. Regale us with a (true) story of the heroic sysadmin who saved the world (or did something awesome).
I remember this one time, about 6 months ago. It was late when I got a message on m.$$ {Connection Reset by Peer}--.. Raise common.ProtocolError , command ProtocolError: 600

                  beginning memdump...

uptime for one of my netware 2 servers was 4000+ days
had to shutdown, because we needed to replace the UPS

Wow. There's the old story that makes its way around every so often about the netware server that was on the network but no one could find it until they heard a fan running in the wall. Somehow the thing got walled in during a renovation. I wonder if it was ever true...

Anyway, check out these screenshots. Yours blew away these guy's servers by a mile!!

I still harbor a belief that somewhere there's an old BSD or UNIX server that hasn't been rebooted since the '70s.

I?ve seen an MF in Tel Aviv a few years ago that was operational since the 80s. their decision point on whether to upgrade or not, is at the point they can?t find spares on ebay
