    No why?
I don't see a real reason to do this.

Somehow it doesn't look like you do have 42% free space on that drive... Have you ran Analyze before?
If you don't have enough free space, the defrag won't work...

Re: Should I defrag this drive?

Convert it to FAT16 using the FORMAT command. That'll fix it...

you generally don't need to defrag partitions that are formatted using a journalling FS

Try telling that to the users of our file servers - who experience a 40% degradation in performance over 4 months if we don't use DisKeeper. Regardless of what Microsoft's official documentation says, NTFS DOES need to be kept in a reasonably fragment-free state to function at its best efficiency and speed, and it DOES therefore need a regular (if not nightly) pass with a schedulable defragmentation tool. I would not recommend using Microsoft's Defrag simply because it is not scalable and manageable to the Enterprise environment.

that is exactly why I like to use ext3/riser/jfs/etc

Ouch, that looks like one sick drive you have there.

How did it ever get to that state!

Run any automatic defragmenter on it? It ought to prevent recurrence of severe fragmentation after you've cleaned this one up.

I should have spotted the % free space number, but was hypnotized by the vast expanse of red
