  • Vista doesn't access FAT32 external hard drive

    Hi all,

I am new here so hoping someone can help.

I have bought a 1 TB usb external hard drive to use with for storing dvd's to watch on the ps3.
I reformatted hard drive to FAT32 but when I try to access the drive to create folders. Vista tells me that I have to format before i can use it.
    any tips?

Did you format it from the Vista PC or from another machine?

I formatted the drive using the vista machine and a program called FAT32Formatter. I have read a whole heap of blogs but no one else seems to have this problem.

You using Vista 32 bit or Vista 64 bit? From the tiny bit I have read, it is compatible with Vista 32 only. Plus, this appears to be Version 1.0 of the program which is now 3 years old and HDD sizes and storage methods have change in that time.

          I have a 32 bit system.
Is there a different way I should be doing this?

Why not use Disk Management and format it that way??

I have a 1TB external drive attached to my PC. I did as Wullieb1 suggests, and used Disk Management, though I formatted it as NTFS. It took several hours to complete but worked fine.

                this post:
                http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/w...o-FAT32-format

seems to suggest there is a partition size limitation of 32GB for windows Vista...
