  • I turned off user account controls and occasionally get a pop-up bubble notification?

I followed the instructions to turn off UAC here http://www.petri.com/disable_uac_in_windows_vista.htm and and now need to avoid the annoying pop-ups that say check user account controls or check Windows Security settings!

I'm not sure that it can be turned off but It only runs on boot up so if you right click the icon in the system tray and select Exit it won't come back until the next reboot.

I have only ever had to turn it off using method 4 of the attached link you posted.

Never had any issues after that, I'm not altogether sure though that UAC is causinfg your problem. Any screenshots available?

Maybe if you have completed all 4 somethings gone wrong along the way....?

I believe he's referring to the Windows Security Alerts icon in the system tray that is shown on boot up warning that UAC is turned off. AFAIK there's no way to disable the alert for UAC being turned off, you can only right click the icon and select Exit to make it go away until the next reboot.

That's exactly what I'm talking about. The only remedy is to turn UAC back on or right click the notification and select Exit. The notification will be displayed again at the next reboot.

Although I'm not a fan of disabling UAC, here you go:
              http://techboys.typepad.com/techboys..._disable_.html
How to disable the User Account Control status warning message:

              1. Go to Start-> type Regedit in the search bar and navigate to the following
              key:

              2. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center

              1. Add the following value:
              Data Type:
              DWORD
              Value Name:
              UACDisableNotify
              Value: 1
              2. Restart the Security Center service for the change to take effect.

              Updated Version July 2008
To turn off UAC, the easier version, go to start->control panel-> security center. expand the other security settings bar at bottom of list then click turn off user account control. all done.
