Re: Change Mac Address in Vista SP2

    A couple of things.
Final version of Vista SP2 is not out yet AFAIK.
But even if it was, MAC addresses are hard coded in the NIC and are supposed to be that way. Is there any valid reason you you need to spoof that Address?
....If so this is probably the wrong forum for you.

L4ndy is correct. The MAC address is hardcoded in the NIC.
There are tools out there to spoof the mac address. Even on the site itself they are telling you that:
      http://tmac.technitium.com/tmac/index.html
Technitium MAC Address Changer allows you to change Media Access Control (MAC) Address of your Network Interface Card (NIC) irrespective to your NIC manufacturer or its driver. It has a very simple user interface and provides ample information regarding each NIC in the machine. Every NIC has a MAC address hard coded in its circuit by the manufacturer. This hard coded MAC address is used by windows drivers to access Ethernet Network (LAN). This tool can set a new MAC address to your NIC, bypassing the original hard coded MAC address. Technitium MAC Address Changer is a must tool in every security professionals tool box. Technitium MAC Address Changer is coded in Visual Basic 6.0.

You may find the adapter software that comes from the manufacturer of the NIC may give you that ability too.

There are some valid reasons too. NTL used to use the MAC address of your connecting PC when setting up a cable connection. If you wanted to use a PIX firewall this wouldn't work. Fix was to spoof the MAC of the PIX when setting up the connection and then plug the PIX in.

You can spoof your MAC address but you can't change it. It's burned in to the firmware of the card, hence it's called a BIA (burned in address). I suspect this software works at an intermediate layer and spoofs your MAC address.

I think so too, Most of these MAC spoofers use the NdisReadNetworkAddress function.
