  • printer sharing

    Hi

    My setup is:

I have a vista ultimate system connected to my local network which runs XP on a workgroup.

The Vista system has a usb printer on it and as per xp I have right clicked and selected share. The printer now has two little faces.

    In network sharing :

    Private netwrok is set

    Network discovery is on

    File sharing is on

    Printer sharing is on

Password protection and media sharing are off.

My Firewall is off because I use the one in my router.

The vista system can see the xp system and all shared files

The XP system cannot see anything and cannot browse to the printer.

If I right click on the network and explore on the xp machine is throws up a logon screen, trying to log me on as guest ie the autofilled in user name is

Bench/guest (where bench is the pc name)

I have checked the guest account on the vista machine and changed the password to nothing.

Would appreciate and hints/ideas been on this all day

    cheers

    Ian

    Re: printer sharing

    Hi

Have you also added Everyone to the permissions list?

When I set up my home network (1 Vista Ultimate SP1 + 1 XP Pro SP3), I had to reinstall the firewall on the XP PC so that Microsoft File and Printer sharing was allowed through (but that is another story Grrr). So, can you check that this is allowed by the firewall on both machines?

I also needed to create accounts on the Vista machine that duplicated those on the XP machine.

      Re: printer sharing

      Hi

thanks for the idea, my firewall is handled by the router so that is not as issue.

However haven't tried setting up the users on the xp machine on the vista one.

      I'll give that a try

      cheers

Don't forget to also add them to the permissions list for the printer.
